A friend is looking to buy one of these and was asking me about it. I know nothing about them. Are they good bikes? What are the common problems?

a buddy has one. His developed an issue with the fuse box. The solder starts to let go and causes intermittent electrical issues.

Checked online for a walkthrough on how to fix it. Soldering iron, flux, and a bit of time and the issue was fixed. Heating up the solder cleaned up the connections and all was good.

Other than that, its been bulletproof. 115,000k when we fixed that issue.

check on a Concours forum. I know there is a few big communities for those bikes and and a few mins will tell you what the common grips with them are.

One thing i do know is that they are pigs.. top heavy and not for a new rider.

You can't ignore it's an old bike no matter how well cared for. It's one of those bikes like the Honda ST, Yammie FJR, Bimmer K/R series......Travel long distances trouble free but, you should know your way around a machine or have access to someone that can work on it that doesn't cost you an arm and a leg.

One of the best bikes built imo.
I believe it is on record for going over 1 million miles on original parts followed by a VFR with 800 miles.

As noted by fellow poster, it's an older bike so go over it first.

I had an '86 for over 10 years. Stored it outside, did minimal maintenance. Really just did oil changes and replaced stuff as it wore out or broke. The only repair I thought was becuase of a bad design was replacing the speedo cable twice. The third time it broke I left it off. Of course, that also could have been due to a lack of lubrication, which could be tied to my sloppy maintenance schedule. Anyway, I don't think the ''94 has cable.
It was a fantastic bike. It is heavy, but once you you get used to it, it starts to feel nimble.....I commuted on it for several years. Plenty of room in the removable side bags (enough for a helmet) - and a huge 28.5L fuel tank (wonder why it's top heavy?)
It had over 100,000 when I sold it.

I agree with the top heavy, especially with full fuel. Mine had the Connie Buzz that was annoying on long rides. Other than that a good bike IMO. Since it's a popular bike you will find lots of parts, info and fellow riders.

Yeah - likely similar to my 93 ST1100....needs to be ridden but basic maintenance will keep them going for a long time and the forums are invaluable.

Certainly bang for the buck is excellent in my case tho it's piggy in the city it's just a treat on the highway. I'd think the Concours similar.

Seems there are lots of parts available

Very similar to the ST in it's use thos 670 lb it's hefty about 40 more lb than the ST1100.

I'm beginning to appreciate these classic sport tourers ..now if it would stop raining I'd get out a bit. :(
