1990 Katana Carb Question

A friend of mine is having issues with his 1990 Katana (other than just having one hahaha). He acquired a 1988 Mikumi carb to replace the ones that are all messed up and he wants to know if they will fit his bike. Any ideas? Internet is giving me conflicting info as is.

He might be able to make them fit, but where did they come from? What diameter are the throats? Are they flat-slides or CV? If he's not competent mechanically, he might have a long learning process..

Tell him to post up on www.katriders.com, there's a few on there that will point him in the right direction to getting his carbs sorted out.

Plus one for Kat riders a great resource. TBH though the Kats carbs are very specific and fussy. I’m not saying it isn’t possible to put new carbs on the bike but the bike seems to have the best performance when a few conditions are met

1) Carbs are clean and all jets are nice and open and the carbs are in general good working order(duh)
2) A/F screws are set to 2.5 turns out
3) Stock air box and filter are used. (If he’s using KN Pods its very difficult to get running right and the K/N filter that replaces the stock one directly isnt much better). In some cases going to the original filter will solve issue assuming other conditions are met.

Look for the document call carbs 101 on the kat riders wiki. Will give you step by step guide to disassembly and cleaning

The 88 katana was a bit of an odd duck, and is different than the 89+ models. the carbs are definitely different. I think that the 88 carbs were 2mm smaller, but it's been a while since i've had a tuna, so I might be off. If he needs some carbs for it i probably have some for him. Send me a Pm for contact info if you like.

refer him to katriders for sure. He will have all of his questions about that bike answered there.
