1990 Honda VTR250 Air FIlter

I want to replace my air filter. Honda Wants $70+ for a paper filter, I was hoping for a high flow, Can't find one available anywhere, could anyone identify this filter having another model number?

My other idea was to Cut out the paper filter out and install a K&N of a similar shape to the filter itself, retaining the odd shaped surround as a frame(ok I did see this somewhere online so I can't take credit)

The third and final thought is to remove the Airbox completely, and put in cone filters(think that is what they are called) I have seem some around that should fit straight onto the trumpets (I think that is what they are called)
The Danger with this is too much air getting in and running the engine lean?


I would appreciate any and all input as I have only been riding for 27 days, and loving every minute of it!

I am in a similar position with a cb-1 (NC27), several people have cut out the paper section and substituted a k&n or have just ordered 2 stage filter foam and cut out the paper portion of the filter and replaced it with foam. The issue with going with trumpets is the type of carbs you have. I have Keihin CV carbs and they don't do well with trumpets especially in my bike as the airbox is finely tuned, so removal of the air box demands time on a dyno(maybe lots of time) with an assortment of jets to get the jetting correct. Probably more effort than you want to take right now(maybe not). If you have time I would look at altering the current filter but you will have to locate a local supplier of filter foam(2 stage foam is better than single stage) or order a sheet online. I ran across a site selling sheets but can't locate it at the moment.
