16 Year old Motorcycle Insurance

Hi, I am a 16 year old looking to get a motorcycle, the thing is I am worried about insurance costs. I know most of you will say call companies and get quotes but I wanted to ask around to see if anyone has experience with this themselves or for their children. I have at 6+ years riding experince on a dirtbike and I have test drove a Honda grom ( I don't think insurance companies would care but..) I also live in a very small town about an hour away from Toronto. I will only be using the bike to get around town or travel about 15 min to the next town over, oh and also to have a little bit of fun. Can anyone give me any ideas on prices and also a good bike to start on? Thanks :)

A Grom sounds like it would be pretty good for you, actually - the alternative suggestion would be a CBR125R. You'd be able to get a CBR125R cheaper than a Grom, and it's better suited for 80/100kph roads, but the Grom is cooler. Quotes for both should be about the same, unfortunately I can't tell you where to start looking.

The Grom was for sure a very fun bike, but I feel as if I'd get bored of it too quickly. If I have to stick with a 125 to keep insurance costs down for a year or two I am fine with it but If I can get maybe a 250 or 300 that would be much better. Any thoughts?

None of those are unreasonable to start on, but insurance is probably going to be the determining factor

You'll need to call around. I fear that insurance companies will not treat you very well, and you'll need to wait 10 years before you are > 25yo. It is good that you are outside Toronto, in a small town.

I hate to say this, but consider alternatives. An e-bike might be better for your situation until insurance becomes somewhat reasonable.

I started riding at 16 (18 now) on a 1983 Yamaha Maxim 400. Paul South insured me for $2000 a year through aviva. Send him an email and he'll hook you up. psouth@surnet.net

Thanks for the input but there is no way that I am waiting 10 years. I will call around and hopefully get some good rates. I think I'm going to go with a cbr125r hopefully they see a really small bike and treat me well. Can't wait to start riding!

As others have said, it's impossible to guess what rates you might end up with so it's on you to call around – there are some very helpful sticky posts here in this forum that will steer you in the right insurance company direction.

Unfortunately the dirtbike experience, however helpful from a practical standpoint, won't help you from an on-road insurance standpoint. Some insurance companies offer a small discount if you take the M1 training courses available lots of places, however we're only talking a few hundred dollars – your first year insurance will still be fairly steep.

You have picked a practical bike however. In the beginning CC's play a huge part in $$'s. ;)

Just call and find out. You're in a "very small" town a good distance away from a big city; it's possible you might be able to afford to insure a small-cc bike out there but there may be conditions placed (e.g. kms driven per day, purpose of riding etc.)

Write back when you have an answer to help others out in the future.
