12V accessory socket install on a 2010 Ninja 650R?

Folks,

Wondering if anyone here has installed a 12V DC accessory socket on their Ninja 650R, and if so where? I'd prefer not to install mine under the seat, and rather have it accessible to charge my phone, camera etc in my tank bag. Am thinking of installing one either somewhere just under the front fairing section, or maybe right under the dashboard if there'd be clearance. I'll be using a waterproof socket (WalMart/Canadian Tire dealy) and might also hook up a switch somewhere to cut power if necessary.

If anyone has done this, I'd appreciate if you can post some pics and/or tell me where you installed yours if it was in a convenient location.

I got a powerlet outlet from Dualsports Plus (Stoney Creek) and used automotive goop to stick it to the handlebar riser. It also comes with an inline fuse and can be attached directly to the battery. The pwerlet cable also detaches so you can connect your battery charger to the cable when the bike is parked.
 
i used a real cheap *** method. i just cracked open a charger, ran 2 wires out of it and wired it to a random place for power.

all i needed was a usb cable. no socket required now since the usb cable is already present.

If you're going to mount a switch anyways, consider using a SPDT (single pole, double throw) switch.

  • Connect the negative or outer shell of the socket to a ground on your motorcycle frame.
  • Connect Com of the switch to the center lead of your waterproof socket.
  • Connect L1 to your battery's positive terminal.
  • Connect L2 directly to a switched power circuit, perhaps the one powering your tail-light or your headlight if you don't plan on drawing a heavy load through your waterproof socket. As long as you're just looking at powering small loads like a GPS, cell phone, IPod or similar, this will work just fine for you.
  • If you plan on drawing a heavier load like heated grips, consider using a relay. Connect L2 to the trigger input of a relay, and connect the two switched contacts of the relay to the center lead of your waterproof socket and to the positive terminal of your battery respectively.
Depending on the position of the SPDT switch toggle, you can choose to have automatic power-off when you shut the bike off (saves you accidentally draining your battery with your accessory outlet) or you can choose to have power-on whether bike is running or not.

I used the extra leads that came with my battery tender and put a dual 12/5v adapter in my tank bag.

I simply clipped the clamps off the battery side for the tender and wired it in place of where the cigarette adapter was on the car adapter. I hard-wired the tender to the battery. Now I can connect the tank bag where the tender would go and get two 12v and two usb ports at once.

The only trouble is I started with a cheap car adapter so only the USB ports still work, also it isn't automatically switched off.
