OTTAWA—Public servants running the prime minister’s website want an additional $600,000 to “modernize (his) digital presence,” documents released by the government show.

The funding requested by the Privy Council Office (PCO), which provides non-partisan support to the prime minister and cabinet, would bring the price tag of operating the pm.gc.ca website to $1.6 million this year.

But web development companies and marketing experts question the $1.6-million price tag.

“Sometimes it’s hard to see what’s behind the scenes, but I just can’t imagine anything there that would require that kind of operating budget,” said Rick Silver, CEO of Toronto-based web development company WebPro.ca.

“If somebody said how much to build something similar to this? It would be a stretch to say in the tens of thousands. Probably for $10,000 to $20,000 I could replicate this pretty easily.”

The fact that they are asking for so much money to run the Prime Minister's website is just mind blowing.

Coincidentally, the company that developed the website (OPIN, in Ottawa), is now going to do some business with people at my workplace. I hope the bill is less than $1.6 million!

How can you stop something like this, which seems a total waste of tax money?!

1.6 mil sounds quite high, but it's not completely ridiculous. This isn't just "building a website", it's running an entire digital PR/marketing machine. The agency must have several staff members working the account full time.

Guy who says he could "replicate the website" for $10-20k is an idiot.

If you gave a low or reasonable quote you'd get ignored. It has to be gold plated to be viable. That's just a good guess based on previous observations.

Ok I just took a look a pm.gc.ca and I would like to take back the last sentence of my previous post. That is one basic site.

http://pm.gc.ca/eng is a pretty basic site.

Yes, you have ongoing expenses, but asking for another $600,000 annually.

It seems to be the only viable business model in this country is to become a vendor for the government???

I'm an electrical engineer, own my own company, and design and manufacture electronics for a variety of industries, and my largest customer is the US navy, and I personally design components for a US drone program. I only provide this background so that you can judge my technical authority in saying this: the entire web industry is a giant sham, I have had to work with "web designers" that charged 10's of thousands of dollars to produce what I (and my colleagues) would call high-school fluff, a few days work. Yes, $600,000 for any website is a sad joke, but speaks more of the retards that pay it, then the those that charge it. It also speaks to the the entire "green energy" program, pushed by the same technically illiterate politicians and bureaucrats that would be stupid enough to pay 100's of thousands of dollars for what is (yes) a 10 to 20K website.

I am heading up the rebranding for my company and it's easily six figures. At this level, the competing agencies would have priced in a team of staff, plus their overhead for a set time. It adds up very quickly.

To add to this, it depends on the level of detail. Union express for example hired WINKREATIVE to do everything from custom fonts, color palette, right down to the seat and uniform design.

I think that was a $4.6M bill.

If that's true it's ridiculous.
I would fire all of you, hire some kids fresh out of college that would do the job just as well for 600k, and save 4 million. :D
And i'll bet if you put the websites side by side, 9 out of 10 people wouldn't see any difference.
