Hey everyone,

Need some advice. It had been about 2 days since i took my ride out. This morning when i started my bike a huge pop, like a gun shot. I thought my bike blew up. I was in a parking garage so when my ears stoped ringing i could hear the bike running fine.

Has been running fine since, i would only assume jets could have been plugged or carbs had too much gas in them.

Anything to worry about?

Thanks in advanced.

wow, my 2010 has done that twice now too, 1nce a while back at home and again today at the office (both times in a garage), ive been ignoring it but it would be nice to know what causes it, my only conclusion is because its been sitting a while in a dusty enviroment -_-;

Good to know im not the only one . . . .

Anyone have an idea as to what would cause this ? Just wana prevent it from happening again . . . I would like to keep my hearing. =P

Hi guys,
Bikes are so civilized these days... EFI, latest emissions requirements, euro noise standards...!
All bikes used to fart and backfire - it is characteristic of a high-performance motor.
Now these Ninja250s rev high, and I have heard they don't idle well below 1500 RPM.
They are a bit old-school (bias-ply tires, carburetors) but they must meet all the latest 2010 world standards.
Bottom line is they are jetted lean from the factory.
They actually run all the leaner in the cool, dense Canadian air...
The bone-stock bike will benefit from a DynoJet jet kit.
Lemee see here, I can shoot you a link:
http://www.partscanada.com/app/webroot/catalogue/2010/mcv2/en/
Pages 499/500. Part # 134984
Note: This jet kit is designed for the stock bike with the (non-disposable) K&N high-performance air filter, Part # 152478, which works fantastic and is the last air filter you'll ever buy.
In stock trim, the bike is brutally lean.
Don't even dream of putting a slip-on muffler, K&N etc. with the stock carburetion...
The stock bike demonstrates its leanness by extreme cold-blooded behavior.
Hard to start; hard to get/keep running; slow to warm up; requires choke long time; idles high; backfires...
But no - technically there's nothing wrong with your bike (and supposedly, you are helping save the planet).
Regards

Lean...My girlfriends 09 250 was a b**** to start, wouldn't idle and was plain unrideable straight from kahuna. It's a known issue with the 250's but they just keep sending them out the door the way they are. I had to take it in to them (110km each way...twice) and they increased the pilot jets to get it to run.

Hmm . . thanks for the posts, I guess I could have mentioned that I did replace the air filter with the K&N. was thinking of a slip on and was going to take it in after that for new jets/jetting work.

Very General Rules

Backfire through the intake is too lean

Backfire through the exhaust is too rich

Very general because there are lots of variables (timing, valve adjustment, etc.).

My wife had an '08 and it never back-fired like that so ???? Not sure what's going on there. Those 250's are generally extremely lean running bikes though and require either re-jetting or at very least shimming of the needle jets to allow them to start and idle properly in cooler temps. Not sure why they haven't fixed that after two years now

I thought I was hearing something the other morning. Mine did it as I was starting it, I was looking around trying to figure out where the gunshot came from lol

Lol, first thing I though was . . okay the engine just blew up. I really didn't see any smoke/ back fire. Just a loud bang just like a gun shot. Has not happened since however I never let the bike sit for 3 days since either . . .

Happened to me twice. Once randomly after sitting in the garage for a few days and another time the day after I washed it (first time starting it after washing it).
Could the pop be caused by water in the exhaust?

if your battery is low, 80% goes to the starter& 20% goes to the cdi. if the voltage drops below 9volts the engine will turn over from the starter motor, filling the exhaust pipes with fuel but cdi will not fire until you release the stater button and the momentum of the engine still turning with the starter load discontinued will allow the cdi to energize, egniting the fuel in the exhaust pipe.
