05 Gs500f valve shims- too tight to measure

Hello, Doing my first valve adjustment on my 05 gs500f with ~15 000km on it. I attempted to measure the clearance but ALL were under .203 MM (my smallest feeler gauge) now spec is .3mm - .08mm so I know I need new shims but how can I tell what size?

The shims that were in were 2.72 for left exhaust, 2.70 for right exhaust, 2.65 for left intake, 2.62 for right intake.

I replaced the left exhaust with the right intake but still could not get a reading even after turning the engine a few times to release the oil under the shim.

Any thoughts at this point?

Are you sure you were at TDCC? How much work is moving shims around, you could move the thinnest shim to each location and then measure.

Yes i'm sure I was at TDC, the two intake and right exhaust valve are measure once, then rotate the engine to measure the left exhaust valve. I'm going to the shop tomorrow to get shims. I'm going to try a few 2.55 and 2.50 and see how that goes

yup, put in thinner shim(s) and re measure. a bit of a pain. valve clearance can tighten up, especially on an engine revved hard. the valves "sink" into the seats.

its a good thing you are adjusting clearances, tight valves can lead to burnt valves. if a lack of clearance causes a valve to not completely close, hot gases leaking past valve(s) will burn the valve(s) over time.

gs500 is a great bike for your first try at setting clearances-simple engine and easy to get at.

dont drop any shims into engine!

Where are you getting shims? Do they have them in stock or do you have to order?

I've got an 06 with about 35k now. Had valve clearance done at about 29k, but it's starting to sound loud again already. Was thinking about tackling this myself next time.

This. ^^
Many people think if they don't hear 'ticking' they're fine...
Which is very untrue.

Update: I made a huge mistake. My first set of feeler gauges was measuring in .1 mm increments, not 0.01mm increments.
Needless to say after I realized this i re-measured and went to the dealer to get the proper shims.

This is the first time i've done a valve shim adjustment and it was not that difficult. There are lots of videos and information out there to help you through it but I would recommend buying the valve shim tool, it makes life easier.

btw Raydowe i'd be willing to lend a hand / bring the valve shim tool & a few extra shims if you'd like.

Thanks, I might take you up on that. Not sure when in going to get around to it, but ill let you know.
