    I run a furnace humidifier and keep the house at thirty five percent in the winter . Gas fireplaces and gas furnace dries the place out .     paint the stringers to hide the shadow of where the bull nose should be , use some masking tape for sqeeze out control and pump full of DAP white caulk and call it done. Sawdust/filler and stain or finish mixed in will look like dog poo jammed in there .
