Same here. My Scala's sound better with earplugs in. The earplugs take out some of the highs. I prefer using my comms (talking or listening to music) with earplugs in rather than without.

I agree with Referbs being a good option. I would stay away from the Surface Pros. We ran SP2's at work. They all went in for warranty work. They work 'fine' now but they were super expensive to purchase up front and we cannot do any upgrades / repairs to them.
