California bound on an FJR1300 in April

Yosemite and Mt Rainer and definitely Mt, Saint Helens will still be closed. Although canyons near Virginia city ( Near Reno) will be a blast combined with circumnavigation of Lake Tahoe.

    Where can I go practice?

Wherever you go. First do a walk-around over the lot, check for sands, oil, ice etc. Then have a fun practicing.

Commuting gear suggestions - specifically knee/shin armour.

Commuting gear suggestions - specifically knee/shin armour.

Chaps You can get textile chaps that can go over your pants or http://www.canyonchasers.net/reviews/clothing/carhartt.php. You can modify the carhartt to accept knee pads. I've seen it done, the hole on the bottom of the dual layer was widened and velcro was added, slip in knee pads. Kneepads...

I get it, you're excited to ride but...

I did not stopped riding since last year, but I will suggest the same as the OP, if you can't enjoy riding without pulling a wheelie, tailgating while doing 100kph and above, putting their knee down in the corner, speeding etc. Its still cold, sand is on the corners, your race spec tires don't...

Lets talk about Commuter mods/add ons

You want to commute, not go on a fashion show. :) For no luggage option better get a Scooter, lots of under seat storage. The windshield and topcase looks bad imo. For mounting bags SW- motec makes better mounts that you can remove if you're not using the bags, unlike the bulky mounts for Givi.

Lets talk about Commuter mods/add ons

Best commuter mod is a lockable hardcase. Briefcase in the bag when riding, helmet, and jacket the bag while in the office. Big hassle to walk around carrying your helmet or worse someone peeing in it if you leave it locked to your bike. Add heated grips, its always there when you need it...

Lets talk about Commuter mods/add ons

Barely enough gas? For 200 kms? You can go farther with a 125 vs a 600ss There is also the adjustable windshield attachment that you can fold, unfold to change angle and height.

    Cruisers and sport bikes

I like that idea :). I am mostly solo but sometimes long for company on the boring but sometimes necessary super-slab stretches. And company help me control myself from staying too long out or wandering too far. I like riding for comfort, thats why i choose standard bikes for long distance...

California bound on an FJR1300 in April

Haven't been to those roads but plan to ride Natchez Trace Parkway this year. I guess my tips are - stay off the Interstate and ride it like you stole it :). Detour east for Barber Vintage Motorsport Museum. It's worth the ride if you haven't been there.

California bound on an FJR1300 in April

:( Roads that I missed. My excuse was snow/rain forecast in the high area, my new to me bike was already struggling with altitude (carb), and I need to catch a flight. Reason to go back. :)

California bound on an FJR1300 in April

http://www.gtamotorcycle.com/vbforum/showthread.php?141908 This was our trip in June done by 2 Bandit on 2 Bandits. Check the video after Beartooth pass. Temp can really vary from heatwave in chicago to hailstorm in montana. I was only miserable once, wet and cold crossing the rockies to BC. I...

    Headsets or not???

Same , when i organize a ride, I lead from the back and let those more sporty in front. 1 km range is enough for them to ride aggressive until communication cuts out and then they wait for me to catch up. Everybody enjoys at their own pace and i bring the group to new places.
