Insuring under your friend's name is fraud. When you go to make a claim, the insurer will almost certainly investigate and discover your stupid ploy and:
1.) Can deny portions of your claim
2.) Flag both you and your friend for misrepresentation fraud (i.e. neither of you will get...
Either the $320 quote was a mistake, or the quote was based on a newer (higher) set of rates than the $300 quote. You might have been paying $150/yr, but the renewal cost of each might have been $160/yr?
First off, insurance and the Gov't are not "in bed" with each other; in fact, it is quite the opposite. The Gov't won't let insurance companies make any move without their approval (and they DO disapprove a lot of requests by insurance companies, even if they are reasonable). Insurance is...
This isn't true. It is against the law in some of the Atlantic provinces, but it certainly isn't against the law here in Ontario. Gender is used for rating auto insurance, particularly for people aged 24yo and under, where it can have a pretty significant impact. I don't know of many insurers...
Can't you determine their groups by doing an online quote? I thought there was a dropdown or something where you select your group?
Have you tried quoting with regular TD to see what the difference in premium would be?
It really depends on the insurer -- every insurer has different rules on when they will pull your MVR from the Ministry of Transportation. Since it's expensive, insurers are usually selective in who they will pull an MVR for. I can't speak to State Farm's rules.
It's part of the Insurance Act and it is clearly stated right on the Ontario Insurance Application:
Warning - The Insurance Act provides that where:
(a) an Applicant for a contract, (i) gives false particulars of the described automobile to be insured to the prejudice of the Insurer, or (ii)...
Platinum_Cycle knows what he's talking about -- this is the answer you want to read.
FYI, insurance companies are not allowed to increase your rate as a result of a claim where you are deemed 25% or less at fault.
People who don't know better falsely assume that Gov't insurance means cheap insurance. They use provinces with low claim frequency/severity as their example (such as SK, MB). IMO, people in SK are actually being ripped off by the Gov't insurer (SGI) -- I've done the analysis and if I were...
Sounds like you need a new neighbour! TO certainly isn't all about neighbourly love.
I'm glad the adjuster experts on the board were able to help you out!
I'm guessing that ended Guy2's friendship with Guy1? If it was indeed a theft, I don't think Guy2 can claim the injuries. If Guy2 actually received permission from Guy1 to ride the bike, then he should be going after Guy1.
In part. I've heard that the Auto Reforms in Ontario are reducing claims better than expected. Hopefully this trend continues so that we can see more rate decreases in the future.
This is incorrect. If you bring your car to State Farm, you will get a very large discount on the bike (about 35-40%) but unfortunately no discount on the car. Home/Tenant and Life Insurance policies will earn you some discounts on the car, but not on the bike.
I don't know the Jevco premium-earning schedule, but I'm sure that it's similar to State Farm's:

I don't work in Claims, but I agree -- it sounds like you are being screwed.
As for the huge rate increase, I highly doubt that it's due to changing rates, but more likely because they are considering you partially at fault in the collision (which is wrong given the circumstance as you...
Be a university *graduate* will allow you to join a group insurance program with Meloche Monnex. Since you are still a student, I don't think you would qualify. State Farm offers a "Good Student Discount" that can reduce you rate by about 10% if you maintain a certain grade level in your...
July and August are prime riding months, so you are using up premium faster than you are paying it. It's also pretty strange that you are cancelling a policy within a few weeks of starting it -- you will probably have to pay a minimum retained premium as well. You are best to call TD and...
