Glad to see you got out for a ride, I did not end up going. I would have no issues with riding in those conditions either.
Putting the studded ice tires on will extend my season.
That is the same one I have, it works great and haven't had any issues so far. I will let you guys know if my bike falls down on the highway though. I have not read or seen too many real life examples of them failing, can someone share if they find some.
It's good to be able to get out a few times in the winter. However, if you don't have a lake to ride whenever you feel like it, it may not worth the investment.

I've heard really good things about the Madstad on this bike. The only reason I don't have it is because I would break it in no time.

My 2013 stock headlight is the dimmest absolute worst headlight I've seen on any vehicle. Period!
I still use it because I do not ride at night much. I should upgrade it for safety reasons though.

I am not a fan of modificatios. But, I also have the Rally Raid levers, footpegs and exhaust. They all make a huge difference for riding off road for all the same reasons you described.

Top box is not necessary, but very convenient when you have to lock up your helmet. I am sure you know that already. Touring with side cases and putting bags on the seat will also be more than adequate.

It is always a great "event" everytime I get together to ride with friends, I am sure you feel the same when you get out.
I just don't think you'll get a lot of interest in the hill climbing event since many of us can find hills to climb for free.
I think you'd have a hard time getting people to show up for $50, $200 will guarantee the event will not happen. Unless there is prize money involved for the the winner?
The only reason I would consider a X300 over my CB500X would be for the 19 inch front tire and roughly 40 to 50 lbs lighter weight.
