    1976 Yamaha DT400 Build

Just a quick update, we had some issues with the clutch pack thickness with the new EBC friction and steel plates. The clutch was contacting the inside of the side cover. The people on the Enduro forums helped us figure out the new steel plates were a bit thicker than the originals. So we...

    1976 Yamaha DT400 Build

Sorry for the late reply - this one slipped past me. On ADVRider, someone responed with this post, I brought the crank to Bondi Engines outside of Barrie and they sorted it out for me. I don't remember the price exactly, I think it was somewhere in the $100 dollar range. I had to provide my...

I buy my bearings from bearingscanada.com, shipping is fast and their selection is pretty good.

Is it just me of has the quality of tools gone to hell?

I've had the same problem with JIS, using proper JIS screwdrivers. But yes, unwittingly using Phillips on JIS screws may have coloured my opinions early on.

Is it just me of has the quality of tools gone to hell?

My understanding is Phillips were designed to cam out to prevent over-torquing. Could be fake news, either way they are ****. I only have a few here and there left on the bikes I rebuilt, I try to swap over to hex head bolts or socket head cap screws.

Is it just me of has the quality of tools gone to hell?

I'm sure they made crap stuff back then, and only the good stuff has survived till now. Rose tinted glasses maybe. I've had two ratchets crap out on me, one Snap-On from the 80s and one Stanley from a few years ago. Both 1/4" drive, maybe no surprise. Probably my fault. I've only ever felt tool...

    1969 Honda CT90

Update - Swapped out the 19mm keihin clone carb that came with the engine for a real Mikuni VM26 about six months ago. I think we are riding the edge of over-carburation, but we are getting 90+ mpg still and it will pull pretty good. I think we are on something like a 20 or 25 pilot and a...

    Only 2nd, 4th, and 6th Gears Working

Oh boy, that sounds like a bugger. I'm not sure what bike you have, but maybe try pulling the right side cover and clutch and see how the shift mechanism is working, before you decide whether to split the cases. Maybe you'll be lucky, and it will just be an issue there.

Choosing a project bike to work on with my daughter

Cool! Sounds like a great plan!! If I were you, I'd go with an air cooled carbureted single. I have had a lot of fun working on my Honda CT90 and my Yamaha 2 strokes. Maybe ask your daughter and yourself what you'd like to be left with when its done. Street riding? Trail? Both? Wishing you...

    1976 Yamaha DT400 Build

Well, it runs! We filled it up with 32:1 premix and 10w40 in the trans. It took some time for us to adjust the throttle cable properly too. The length is a little off, and the adjusters are all rusted  This cable is split in the middle, one end going to the carb and the other to the...

    1976 Yamaha DT400 Build

Thanks! Yea, probably not on the radar back then. Luckily it seems to be growing more useful all the time. Here's a GIF showing the flexibility of the TPU filament I started a thread on ADVRider for anyone interested in more detail of the 3D printing 3D Printing an Intake Boot

    1976 Yamaha DT400 Build

A friend of mine actually ended up 3D printing one with a flexible filament. Final result feels pretty much like the original I imagine, in terms of flexibility. I didn't have an original, so I designed it based on the gap in the bike. I may make a separate thread here outlining this process for...

    Lost keys for old motorcycle

I ordered a set of keys for my S90 from eBay based on the number on the lock, only to realize when they arrived that they were the exact same as my CT90 keys. Same number and everything.

    1976 Yamaha DT400 Build

I can find good aftermarket foam filters that fit the stock airbox - no problems there. The rubber part here (#13) I think has similar inlet and outlet diameters, and 2 90-degree turns. I think in the following years ('77+) they changed this to a more nozzle-shaped straight section like you are...

    1976 Yamaha DT400 Build

Thanks! I'll keep all of it in mind when I put the reeds in For airbox - I was planning on just using a foam pod filter to get it going (I've seen pics online of DT250/400s using unifilter pods etc) but I've come to understand that the shape of the airbox could play in to how the bike runs...

You could also check ebay based on this number. I've bought missing keys for my bike that way

    1976 Yamaha DT400 Build

I have some carbon fiber reeds ready to go in now that the pressure test is done. I don't actually know much about running and tuning 2 strokes. This whole thing has been a learning experience, start to not-yet-finished. Nice!! Let us know how it goes. In one of the basket case DTs I picked...

    1976 Yamaha DT400 Build

Almost 2 years later :confused::confused::confused: The bike has been sitting, waiting, while I've been distracted elsewhere We finally rebuilt the motor. Last week we did the bottom end, taking it slow and making sure we didn't screw up Yesterday, we finished assembling the...
