Motorcycle mistakes you only make once... and ones you make all the time...

Yeah this is a mistake I make over and over again, especially on a new and unfamiliar bike: Guess which camp I fall into... Motorcycle mistake I've only made once Leaving anything on the pillion seat or on top of the panniers/topcase, and then riding away - the aforementioned items...

Motorcycle mistakes you only make once... and ones you make all the time...

So common. How many times have I seen on the Internet: "Help! Bike won't start!" "It's your battery, dude." "I'm pretty sure it's not, I charged it up, tested it with a voltmeter, 12.8V... It's not the battery! I'm gonna replace the <<stator/regulator/fuses/flux capacitor>> and get back to you...

Also to add: when working on the bike with the centerstand, ratchet-strap or ziptie the centerstand in the deployed position to prevent it from rolling off if you're wrenching hard on it. If you're extra-paranoid, ziptie the front brake as well. DAMHIK Again, one of those "once and only once"...

You're a better rider than I am. I can't take my gloves off and put them back on when I'm riding. I crash into trees and ride off into ditches quite regularly even with both hands on the grips...

Motorcycle mistakes you only make once... and ones you make all the time...

I feel like these lessons can't be told or taught to new riders. You need to actually experience, firsthand, the gut-wrenching emotional and financial pain of dropping your beloved ride because of your own newbness, so that the ensuing PTSD becomes the greatest teacher ever.

Motorcycle mistakes you only make once... and ones you make all the time...

Wow, that's some serious range. Like PP, my fob needs to be in a specific range and area (behind the dash, not in front of the headlights) to start the bike at all. Seems like the extended HD fob range is very prone to remote hijacking - all someone needs to do is break into your garage and...

You can get cheap customized covers for the fobs in different colours to tell them apart. These are ones for the BMW motorcycle fobs. We had identical fobs for my R1250GS and my wife's R1250RS. Did I buy those coloured-coded covers for the fobs? Nope. Did I mistake the fobs and sometimes...

    GPS vs Phone

Yeah, all my off-road buddies use it, it really is well thought out for Adventure riding. Good, robust power interfaces too that will stand up to weather, vibration and abuse. My only issue right now is that DMD2 only offers two sizes for their official devices: 6" smartphone or 8" tablet. They...

You're not wrong, and I welcome this move as well. Rented a current-model BMW R1250RT last winter and the BMW Connected App allowed you to throw up the GPS from your phone onto the motorcycle's TFT screen. Brilliant! One thing I can't stand about both the phone or dedicated GPS is that extra...

The Zumo XT2 is the latest and greatest from Garmin, but you can still find places selling the older (by about 18-24 months) Zumo XT, which has a smaller screen and is a bit less feature-laden. Differences here...

    GPS vs Phone

We rode in the rain quite a bit with the phone GPS. Even when stopped and with gloves off, you have to wipe the screen dry (and keep it dry) for the capacitive screen to properly recognize your finger. Otherwise you'll suffer ghost touches and improper tracking of your finger motions. Same...

    GPS vs Phone

Most of the phone's internals are solid state, so no moving parts to damage. What has changed in the last few years are the stabilization motors utilized by some of the higher-end cameras, and those can get wrecked by the vibrations from the motorcycle unless it is adequately dampened. Here's...

    GPS vs Phone

Just spent the last few weeks on a rental with my phone as GPS. It's cheap (basically free), and hook-up is easy. Google Maps is simple to use and is up-to-date, and all the pros & cons that you've already mentioned above. However, the #1 downside for me is that changing anything on the...

Motorcycle mistakes you only make once... and ones you make all the time...

Motorcycle mistakes I've only made once: Taking off my jacket and putting it on the seat of the bike, with part of it touching the hot exhaust. Forgetting to put the kickstand down, or thinking it's down when it's actually partially retracted, then letting the motorcycle slowly begin its long...

Buying a vehicle (non motorcycle) as is from private vs dealer

I have a 3rd Gen Tacoma bought brand new, very reliable, but I've heard the 2nd Gen (05-15) are pretty dependable as well, especially post-2010 refresh. There is a substantial fit and finish upgrade on the 3rd Gens, but some owners prefer the 2nd Gen 4.0L engine over the 3.5L 3rd Gen. Never...

MotoGP 2025 Discussion Thread *Warning: Spoilers allowed*

It really depends on how much better the best bikes are compared to the rest of the field, as well as how talented or how compatible certain rider's styles are to the bike. So many variables. The 800cc Desmos were real stinkers as was Ducati's first attempt at the 1000cc. All that was masked by...
