    Chain Lube

I lubed my first few chains regularly then decided to stop and see what happened. The first chain I didn't lube lasted essentially just as long as the ones that I did, and it didn't get rusty either. Maybe if you're trying to get 35,000km out of a chain.... I just treat the chain and...

    Chain Lube

Why bother? Is getting a few hundred extra kilometers out of a $150 chain really worth the hassle, mess and expense of cleaning and lubing? I regularly get 20,000km out of a good quality X-ring chain riding dirt and gravel on my KLR and all I do is wipe it with an oily rag before storing it...

Temporary Stickers Before Registering as "Fit"?

Bought a truck recently without a safety. Registered it as unfit and asked for a temp sticker. No sticker, but the 10 day period is marked on the 'unfit' registration. When the buyer re-registers the bike with the safety the new registration paper will have the proper expiration date.

Satellite communicators/beacons - who has one?

I have the Zoleo. Bought it for a trip up north a couple of years back. The messaging was flawless and the breadcrumb map service was a nice touch for the people back home to keep track of where I was. I loan it out a few times per year to family/friends for their remote trips or hunt...

Harley Davidson Leather "Motorclothes" - Fashion or Function?

I got a giggle out of that, thanks. I've always assumed that the bikes would refuse to start if the rider wasn't wearing at least 1 piece of branded merch...

    is alcohol better than electricity?

Back in 2012 I wrote my undergrad thesis examining the merits of American ethanol production from an environmental policy point of view. In summary, corn-based ethanol only makes sense as an agricultural subsidy policy, not as an environmental policy. The energy balance was a net negative...

    is alcohol better than electricity?

And the significant environmental cost of extracting and refining the uranium. And of course the ever increasing volumes of incredibly toxic waste that we have no good way of dealing with. Our current 'stick it in a hole next to the Great Lakes and forget about it' plan is a real genius idea...

Electric Motorbikes are here from Harley, Triumph, Ducati and ????

Now all we need is an energy storage medium with about 10x the energy density of Lithium batteries and we'll be good to go...

    Bike not selling

FB, and I agree, it is utterly useless but that seems to be where the buyers are.

    Bike not selling

When I was selling my Goldwing this spring, I posted on Kijiji, Autotrader and FB Marketplace. It seems that for some reason, people have switched from Kijiji to Marketplace. I had probably 3x the inquiries from Marketplace than I did from Kijiji, which sucked because Marketplace is really...

Riding in shorts yes or no???

When I were a lad my brother an I were goofing around in a parking lot with some buddies, car surfing and the like. Bro slid off the hood of a car moving maybe 10km/h. We drove to the ER and I got to spend 4 hours watching a nurse pull gravel out of his hands. Gloves. (y) This thread also...

    Airhawk Dual Sport Air Cushion

I bought an Air Hawk 6-7 years back to use on the KLR. It has the OG rubber bladder. It does work to alleviate the pain and numbness from long rides, but I found that it gets too hot. I guess the rubber kind of seals around my butt and prevents any air flow. On a very hot day riding through...

    Seems expensive

MSRP for a 2022 1050XT is $17,000 in SK. Add in taxes, dealer fees and that leaves $35,000+ for paint, side cases and flashing lights? Seems pretty bad to me...

    Rescue beacons et al

I bought a Zoleo satellite comm for my ride across Canada last fall. Lots of areas up north with little to no cell coverage. It was very useful for keeping in touch with folks back home and it made me feel better about riding through areas with no cell coverage and little traffic. I loaned it...

    Cylinder bore in Durham/East GTA?

Anyone know of a decent machine shop in the East end of the GTA that would bore out the cylinder on my KLR? I'm looking to fix an oil burning issue by going with a new, larger diameter piston kit. I just need to factor in the cost of boring the cylinder before I take the plunge. Thanks

    Riding across Canada

If you're staying in Canada, take the Yellowhead highway over the Trans-Canada every time. Still not the most exciting scenery in the world but it's not quite as monotonous. The Southern prairies are beautiful but 2 solid days of uninterrupted wheat/canola fields is a bit mind-numbing. The...

M Licensing Course for insurance discount

If you're doing the M2X test with Drivetest/MTO, make sure you go over the entire route before hitting the road (don't let them rush you to start before you're clear on what's expected). The earpiece they had me wear was like a torture device and between the tester's accent, the terrible...

I don't know you, stay the f*** away from me!

To be clear, I have no issue with people following me in the right tire track as long as they maintain the usual proper following distance. My mini-rant was prompted by people taking up position closer than most tailgaters.

    Purchasing from QC

I bought a car from a guy in QC about 15 years ago. I did eventually receive the QC taxes back, but iirc it was about a year later. Didn't bother me much, as the car was still cheaper than a comparable car in ON, even with the QC taxes added on.
