The "Official" Watch Thread and all Things Horological

I am not married to any brand but Banda has worked well for me in the past, value vs quality. Often I just find something I like the look of on Amazon and just cruse through the reviews. Specially on cheaper time pieces. I am also partial to NATO straps for comfort.

    COVID and the housing market

A horizontal move can be very expensive. 4% real estate fees on the sale. LTT on the purchase (double in Toronto). Lawyer fees. Moving costs. Possible breaking mortgage penalty costs but this can be avoided. I would also factor in maybe 20K to 50K in near term renos, less of an issue going...

    FYI DEER

If you are riding where/when they may be active it is a good idea to just stay behind a car or small truck (that does not block your view of the road). Even if they are going slower than you like, odds are they hit it not you. I do the same driving my car, no need to plow the way. It has saved...

Dear America: GET A GRIP !!!!

In Toronto the pattern I have noted is when bike lanes are added so is the no right on a red for major intersections (via signs). I don't know if it is policy (for bike lanes) or just that they have made changes to the intersection so they also included this change.

    COVID and the housing market

Was there ever a time where the masses did not live pay-check to pay-check? Most of my friends, my friends parents, etc. basically did until the mortgage was paid off. Others never did anything but rent so they stayed that way.

    Hey lawnmower driver

Looks like a Port Colborne problem to me. Lawnmowers are almost never a problem when flying in and out of an airport that is paved....

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

I ONLY do private ones. I like to use the one on the Queensway as it is also right by U-Haul which is a big plus... an inexpensive van rental is cheap insurance vs tire repairs on mine or a borrowed vehicle. They know me well enough I got a bottle of wine from them at xmas.

    Coyotes

Maybe, not sure if they scavenge and are hitting garbages etc??? Regardless, if it is the case, living in that small area will mean lots of peripheral human interaction and once they get too used to people that usually turns out bad for them.

    Coyotes

Pretty sure it is a case of dogs off leash where they are not supposed to be and that is the main cause. At the same time this is a smallish wooded park that is surrounded by houses and a couple of klicks from Mimico Creek and more from the Humber. I am no expert that is for sure but are they...

    ******** deterrents.

Hostile architecture/landscaping is effective. As an example we have a noise wall along one side of our property, I have ivy along our side that I keep trimmed back form the other side. There is one spot where it can be climbed from the other side, I let the ivy grow a bit over the top here...

    ******** deterrents.

What I would like to find is a good outdoor, realistic, barking dog (big dog bark) motion sensing speaker. Hide the speaker in the bushes... Tweakers will not mess with a big dog. I expect it will work well at night.

Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

Most dealers are working on newer vehicles and warranty issues. It is very uncommon (with maybe the exception of the more exotic brands) that they work on many vehicles more than 10 (maybe even 5) years old. They know new car problems as it is their day to day not old car problems. I am not...

    ******** deterrents.

Addicts, meth, fent, crack are not going to care about cameras. They will stand there and look right at them. Luckily they look for low hanging fruit so gates etc. tend to work pretty good for the bottom feeders. Motion sprinkler will give them a startle and they may think someone is there that...

Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

Even quicker, put it on the curb with a dollar figure and watch it all walk off. Alternatively you can always take it to a transfer station and pay a small amount to get rid of it....

Law Enforcement - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly.....

You guys are funny... these people getting caught multiple times without a license/insurance/etc. have already dug a hole so large more fines, credit hits, beater impound fees (BTW the vehicle is still in the previous owner's name as they do not transfer it, why pay taxes...), whatever $$$s make...

Law Enforcement - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly.....

In theory that may be true, but growing up I knew a few people that did similar things, here is what I saw.... Buy a beater, no safety, no insurance, no license, never change the ownership, rinse and repeat (beater of the month club we called it). Already breaking the law, might as well do it...

Law Enforcement - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly.....

It is a step in the right direction but many of these people are just driving beaters. Better if the car had some real value, hopefully it does.

    Anyone here a cyclist?

My tips, Back off the tension on the pedals. When first starting out with clipless you should also just be very conscious and exaggerated unclipping until it becomes second nature. Even well before a planned stop, start with many short rides around the block. Shim the cleats if that is the...
