Cheap GPS device @ Canadian Tire, may be great for warm weather rides.

I'd recommend it above all others but it does have some tiny icons to push on our small screen and if you don't like extraneous functionality it may confuse non tech people.

Ya, after installing it I noticed that it takes up a lot of the screen and the buttons are very small... I'll stick to a more simple clean skin.

EDIT: Actually, I just looked into my cpanel and cannot see read/write option either. Oh well, I guess not everything is possible in 2009 ... :-(

I thought it's simple too and was sure that either myself or the control panel were just missing something. Unfortunately, it appears that functions we are taking for granted in Windows world do not exist in 'nix and the other way around. It makes me want to scream whenever I remember that Microsoft Network Operating Systems still don't have the unerase function/tool - something that was built in Novell 3.x, more than 15 years ago :mad:.

Anyway, I'll examine an option to move to Windows hosting, but that's a long shot.

Anyone with admin rights can use shell access to that ftp folder can assign access rights to a specific user name. Get your provider's tech support to login as some form of admin (or root) and change rights for that username. Or, see http://www.zzee.com/solutions/chmod-help.shtml for some ideas on how to do it yourself, assuming you have two login names.

And Novell 3.x was more like 25 years ago.

Unfortunately I don't have shell access and those that might probably have no clye. They told me it cannot be done and that's it. It took me three days and a couple of dozen emails to even get that. I gave them a "rave" review for their hep, knowledge and support. Unless someone higher up gets upset about it I'm just wasting my time with them. This is a great disappointment because I've been with this host for over five years.

I started working on Novell Netware in 1992 with version 3.11, but I assume they had "salvage" command some time before that. Any user could retrieve several generations of files deleted from the network drive monts ago. Microsoft still doesn't have anything like it.

Novell 3 came out in 89, so it is only 20 years ago, not 25. MS does have a form of salvage in Vista, you can keep previous versions of files. Network file shares are no where near as important as they were back in the Novell days.

Call you ISP and ask to have the issue escalated. Their second (or third) level support should know how to use chmod.

found the best skin (for me) so far...

http://www.gurjon.com/

Here's what I did to get it to work... now I have my truck as the icon instead of the triangle

Download
http://www.gurjon.com/download/index.php?dir=&file=gj6.3p_skin_fullpack.rar

Unrar it and transfer it to your SD card as is... The directories are pre built... (GJ6.3p.zip does in the SKIN folder and EXTENSION does in the top directory)

Download
http://www.gurjon.com/download/inde...e=Kimyaci_Car_Collection_v3.45_Small_icon.zip
unzip and put the "Cars" directory in the top directory

If you are going to use a car picture instead of a triangle, add this to your sys.txt file

[map]
2dheadup=1
3dcarsizemix=30
3dcarsizemax=40
3dcarsizemul=20

Here's the manual for the skin

http://www.gurjon.com/download/index.php?dir=MANUAL/&file=gj_5.x_skin_manual_EN_v2.pdf

I will when I get some time and energy. This whole back-and-forth got me quite exhausted. When I do, I will push for telnet/SSH access so I can do this stuff myself instead of going through idiotic web interface or playing pen pals with their brain-dead tech support.

For those that missed the Curtis craze and can't find one anywhere here is a possible alternative for US$80:

sku_20641_6_small.jpg

4GB class 6 SD card $10.50
8GB class 4 micro SD $16.90
16GB class 6 SD card with reader $38.68

All prices are in US dollars. You pay no shipping, duties or taxes.

Europe maps, buildings and POI are being updated to latest and greatest. Should be all on the FTP by the end of the day. Thanks to my colleague, fellow motorcyclist and GTAMer Jay.

Actually Walmart has one on sale for $64 locally.

It's worth it if it's hackable. The more people have them the better support community we will all have. Speaking of that, I have installed the latest Nas' package and will post impressions, comments and suggestions soon.

Thank you Nas for the torrent, it works great.
Skins, icons, cars, even starry night skies, daytime clouds... tts etc etc
Plus the bonus software is handy... altho having the hack run in the background slows the gps down. Otherwise tis great.

no maps in there, just the base iGO 8 without any maps

just use the maps you already have... The core software is always released separate from the maps, POI, etc....

Here is a new Wiki for the GPS unit

Very nice indeed, thanks for the pointer Nas. A lot to learn from there and maybe even contribute some.

That's how I intend to organize the FTP from now on, BTW. It may be a little easier to download the whole shebang with all the bells and whistles already there, but it's a lot harder to maintain such a package and keep it up to date. I also intend to keep tweaks, hacks, games, OS upgrades, menu systems, etc. separate from iGO. None of that is essential for navigation and it can all be added/removed independently. As a basic rule of thumb, anything that can be added with a simple copy operation will be kept separately, especially stuff that's changed/updated frequently.

Does anyone know how to tame volume control in iGO? It seems to be at 100% no matter how I tweak the settings. I listen to music at a comfortable level, but as soon as I start iGO the volume goes up to stratosphere. Exiting iGO returns it to normal, so...
