Starting to get the itch for a more modern bike. Suggestions for a modern naked?

Gotta agree. The new 3 cylinder FZs were clearly destined to be classics that would be talked about for generations. The FZ8 is already forgotten. Not that it was a bad bike, mind you. But it just didn't do anything remarkable. It would be like trying to satisfy your passion for movies by binge watching Mena Suvari movies.

I'd take the Fazer8 over the FZ9, an i'd take an FZ1 over all of them.

If you do any sort of distance riding you would know why.

FZ8 does not equal Fazer8, especially if consider long distance riding ....

Exactly, so when people say the 8's have no place i say BS. If you want to do laps around your local highschool get a FZ9, if you are planning on doing any form of distance riding the 8's have more to offer.

In terms of naked only i'd have to actually ride them both, the FZ8 is being underrated here imo.

You just have to look at the reviews to know that is true ...and the 2013 brought together a lot of better tech than previous models. Note I only recommended the 2013

FZ9 had serious birth defects even tho it set new standards for value/performance..- too typical for a first year radical redesign and the ergonomics not as good as the FZ8. Kid could have bought the FZ9 ...did not like the ergos
The FJ9 cured some of those issues and I image the triples will get sorted over time as FZ8 did.

The FZ7 is a twin FFS....not in the same class at all.

The FZ8 is very natural segue from a CB750. The CBF1000 even more so.

Similar weight, inline 4, relatively upright seating.
The FZ8 more on the sport end of the scale but you can tour it with some farkles added. Kid did a cross country with me for 3 weeks last year and more coming this year.

The CBF1000 closer to the CB750 all around with more sport touring oriented features.

As a transition - were I the OP ...I'd be all over that $4300 CBF1000 it's such a natural progression and a bloody good deal. There is a reason it's super popular in Europe. Covers a lot of bases for use plus a bullet proof motor.

....

MT-10 ??

Kids next bike.

People can buy whatever they like, all I am saying is that looking at them side to side, specification by specification the FZ08 is just not worth it - Hey people used to buy Pintos.

My High School seems to be pretty far -

Well the OP did say naked, so in my mind the fz09 is a no brainer. Triumph is a close second, but that hideous headlight setup has always put me off. The fazer 8 I get, my wife wants one. The fz8 I don't get, Yamaha themselves made it obsolete real fast.

Retro looking bikes are pretty modern with tc, abs, ride modes, adjustable suspension

Aug 7, 2014 - "Dude, I read your first-ride review when the bike launched and just thought you guys .... I've been tempted by the FZ-09 since the beginning of the year, and have come ... The fueling issue was a big issue as it was so choppy, the solution was to .... I was looking to buy fz9 then I read all the terrible reviews.

2013 Yamaha FZ8 Review | Unexpected Magic
https://ultimatemotorcycling.com/.../2013-yamaha-fz8-review-unexpecte...
Jun 7, 2013 - Yamaha's 2013 FZ8 is a truly magical motorcycle; it's perfect for urban settings, canyon carving or highway droning, and gets unbelievable gas ...

specifically the 2013 ....Yamaha changed things over time to get it right....I'm sure they will with the FZ9 ...the FJ9 is proof of that.

Coming from a CB750 ....I'd not consider an FZ9 a good choice. I suspect after riding a Honda all that time he wants long term reliability and Honda motors are legendary plus this is a detuned Fireblade motor so low stress on parts or this use.

Twin might be okay but the CB750 has earned it's place in "all time great bikes" and having ridden both, the CBF1000 is just a modern version of the same thing....smooth effortless power and light enough to have fun in the twists plus big enough to tour even two up.

There are a number of bikes that are hugely popular ( 650 Vstrom for one ) that meet the needs of many many riders yet hardly are standouts in any sense from "spec" standpoint.

This is a funny but accurate long term review

Honda's media liaison, Scott, was trying to talk me out of it. "What's the point? We've got the Fireblade if you want to go on the track. No matter what you journos think, CBF owners won't be riding their bikes on the track. That's not what they buy them for."

He was right, but my point wasn't that CBF owners would go track day riding, simply that they could.

The CBF1000 is so good I'm looking for new measures of its abilities. So far it's consumed some 6000 miles without so much as a murmur. No oil, no tyres, just fuel. Tim has meanwhile been fussing over Bridgestones, Akrapovics and Power Commanders in trying to get his FZ1 Fazer on the money, so's Jon over his GSX-R6. Even Army John was putting pipes and bars on his now late GSR. But the CBF has just been getting on with it. Yet when Jon hightailed off on his GSX-R one night it was the CBF that went with him, showering sparks mid-roundabout as the pegs dug in deep, but it was there in his slipstream.

And when ad' boyo Barry blipped his R1's throttle at the lights it was the CBF that wheelied away, top-box waving in the wind, then got the holeshot into the sweep before the roundabout. Yeah, it goes like the clappers, as it should, but it commutes 100 miles a day without so much as a sniff too.

No nonsense, just getting on with the job. Man, I just love the way you greet it in the morning, put the key in the ignition and minutes later it's maximum haste to work, day-in day-out.

there are specs...then there is useable performance...:D

I love my Fazer8. Great riding position. I just wish I was 0.5in taller.

I had to do my M.T.O. physical to maintain my A,B, and Z and Apex was on my way back home so I popped in. Got to say the Monster 821 is a really beautiful bike. Some of the KTM are starting to catch my eye. Victory are nice bikes but I think I do not want something so large at this point. Maybe the new Octane would pique my interest.

Interesting, also went to my insurer and the Monster was only about $100 more a year than the GSX-S750. Believe it or not the SV 650 was slightly more expensive than the GSX-S750! How the heck do the actuaries figure this stuff out?

Have you done any ridding on one?

Usable performance? What do you mean by that? There is also lack of performance which is what you get with the FZ8.

And about your quotes, A ****** performing bike can outrun a top of the line superbike depending of who is ridding what.

I have ridden an FZ8 and FZ07 and own a FZ09 and the FZ8 is at the bottom of the list on every category.

Anyways, I hope the OP is able to ride the various bikes he is interested on and make the best decision and my comments were to help him out not to put down anyone that has unfortunately made the bad decision of buying an FZ8 :)

Coles notes: 2 people arguing the supremecy of one bike over another because it's what they chose and one new rider who hasn't ridden any of them somehow arguing why one is better.

The 9 is a wonderfully fun bike. In comparison the FZ8 is soulless. Ride them both and it will be obvious (I have). Which is better.........only the person buying one will know as it's personal.

No one is arguing - We are having a conversation on a topic posted, isn't this what a forum is for, or only people that agree are allowed?

Dumb comment trying to elevate yourself above others... thanks for coming out - Now this is an argument ;)

LOL MacDoc is salesguy mode right now big time.

I know this seems like obvious truths, but: I think any of the bikes the OP listed in the first post are great starting places..ride them all (or as many as feasible) and decide how you want to use it. Then based on your budget and what's available here, there'll be one or maybe two that standout in particular.

I'd like to know how an FZ-07 feels in comparison to the sv650... logical progression, or lateral move?

Edit: As an SV rider, I sat on the GSX-S750, and the tank seemed HUGE!... The Kawi felt big too, but not as big as the GSX-S... Not sure if that helps, but thought it could be useful

I know it's probably out of your price range, but one ride on a Tuono V4 is all it would take to jade you for life.

Those who say I'm wrong: take the challenge. lol

I looked into it. Budget would keep me at a used 2012ish one and the smaller tank on it and thirst compared to the updated one would rule it out for my needs. Too bad.
