10 mph ticket in NY State - reported back to Ontario

I try to follow a 10 mph over or less rule while riding in the States. I wick it up in the twisties.

I've also had great success by avoiding 219 and riding south via secondary or tertiary roads through NYS and into PA.

My insurance went up $160 and I'm as clean as a whistle. I think there was a 10% average up shift.

Traffic violations in USA will be automatically shared with MTO in Canada, if convicted. There is no such thing as making a deal with a police officer.

WRONG!

My $250 speeding ticket in TN in 2011 is not on my record. Paid the ticket, still not on my record.

Source: just got new insurance on a bike this week and they search your entire history.

I thought PA did not have reciprocal reporting?, possibly others? Where did this list come from?

+1

Anything you receive (moving violation) in NY State and Michigan may be carried over to Ontario. Rest of the states are perfectly safe as long as you don't get suspension of license.

Please find enclosed the Reciprocal Agreements which Ontario has entered into:1. Ontario and Quebec (referred to as the Ontario-Quebec Agreement) This is an agreement, separate and aside from the Canadian Driver Licence Compact and was agreed upon and implemented on April 1, 1989.2. Ontario and other Provinces/Territories (referred to as the Canadian Driver Licence Compact)3. Reciprocal Agreement between Ontario and the State of New York, U.S.A.4. Reciprocal Agreement between Ontario and the State of Michigan, U.S.A.All these agreements have an impact on the drivers who live and are licensed in all of the Provinces and Territories in Canada and many of the States in the U.S.A.Information is shared by all the participants with each other, relating to driving offences, fines, convictions and criminal convictions as well.

Suspensions of Licences in Canada and the United States – Agreement with Ontario:There is an agreement of Reciprocal Suspensions of Licences between Ontario and nine (9) Provinces and forty one (41) States and this Ontario Regulation reads as follows (it applies equally to the Provinces and the different States):Subsection 198 (1) of the Ontario Highway Traffic Act extends to and applies to judgments rendered and become final against residents by any court of competent jurisdiction in the following Provinces and States:Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennesse, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virgina, Wisconsin, Wyoming and District of Columbia.

Most of the States don't correspond with each other (i.e PA <-> NY) regarding minor offenses, let alone a foreign country.

Conventional wisdom a few years back was that NYS troopers will write you up for speeding by any amount, and it will probably show up on your abstract, so just don't speed in New York. As for the rest of the country... I don't want to duplicate the other threads on the matter

But (and but but), the OPP seldom patrols in NY State or PA.
Should be ok (from experience) .

I'm sorry, I think my bike falls in to the "Stick to max of 140" category cause it can only go up to 170 xD

The following States have reciprocity with Ontario:
Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Illonois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvannia, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virgina, Wisconsin, Wyoming and District of Columbia

Out of that list, I've tested Colorado, New Hampshire (two times), North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Possibly more, but I can only remember so many tickets. None have come back to haunt me in Ontario.

Hire a paralegal in that county and get him to plead for non-moving violation. There are quite a few threads about it. Not knowing about it (and I guess having a stupid paralegal), I got my 'lawyer' to drop the 20+ over charge to 1 over (YES, a ticket for 1MPH over the limit). Like my insurance company cared - a speeding ticket is a speeding ticket.

^lol Ron.

Was on the same road this Sunday. Really happy our leader didn't speed through there. How long does that insurance rate last?

Hey i know where to speed and actually avoided that stretch before ellicotville on 219. I myself got a performance award for allegedly racing a corvette with my prius :) at the same spot. We both overtake a sunday driver 12 over limit.

But my 2 ticket from 2007 never showed.

Lots of better road than 219.

Got a ticket in the fall on 219, mailed in a plea of not guilty and showed up 4 months later a make shift town court in a community center in some remote town around ellicotville
. ticket was for 27 miles over
reduced down to non moving violation for $150
sometimes you have to pay to play

Lol, Thanks for your research?

That stretch of 219 is brutal and the NY State Troopers are out to get anybody they can. Because of this and the fact that New York has reciprocity with Ontario I always tip toe along at the speed limit from the Canada-US border all the way to the Pennsylvania State line. I've never received a speeding ticket on a bike in the US but I've been pulled over a few times for a stearn warning in PA and NC for things that would be 172 worthy in Ontario. I'm sure there's some pretty good riding in some areas of NY but because of the agreement they have with Ontario I just skip it and enjoy other states that I don't have to worry about insurance implications as a result of a ticket.

I've read that you can plea bargain (or pay a local lawyer to plea bargain for you) to a lesser charge that won't be reported under the reciprocity with Ontario (e.g. non-moving violation) - and that the local authorities are motivated to do so as this keeps the ticket revenue local as opposed to the revenue going to the state level.
