Generators

If anyone knows a thread about generators please let me know as I couldn't find one.

I am going to start looking for a generator to buy in the off season but have never used one/looked for one and never had to do any research so wanted to get some insight from guys here who have one.

- what are some top brands
- brands to stay away from
- how much power do you want, running warmers plus extras
- any great stores to check out or mostly the home Reno stores like lowes and crappy tire
- how much did you pay
- what type if Genny do you have, pros and cons of that model

I am going to start doing some research now so any/all of the above items will help plus any other insight you might have.

Thanks guys.

No need to find a special thread.

Just by a Honda generator and enjoy the best on earth.

How much power is the minimum to look for? 1000 run a set of warmers and other gadgets (maybe a radio or phone charger etc...) or 2000 is the way to go?

thanks, just read through it.

Plus 1 for kijiji.

If you're checking often you will find sellers who under value their Yamaha and Honda generators. You should be able to find a EU2000 or EF2000 for under $1000.
D you know what the different letters are at the end? Just different models? In the thread Mina copied everyone was saying an eu200i but a quick kijiji look shows a bunch of eu2000kc

I read that a while ago but thought it was more so about warmers from John than it was about generators.

And here I thought the KC meant it ran on kerosene.
Funny, even with the ads that state EU2000KC they still show a picture of the EU2000i. Definitely a great generator. Definitely the inverter style costs almost four times the "old" style, but the quiet operation and portability is worth the extra cost. I have a Generac 3250 that I never use since I bought a Honda EU2000i.

Over 2000 you, yourself will never have to worry about power.
Over 3000 you and your friend never have to worry.

If you're running warmers you may need a model like the Honda EU. It makes clean power for electronics.
See a lot of warmers that use a digital type box and some generators really are not good for them.
As Honda states ," Like the rest of the Honda EU Series, its inverter technology provides ultraclean electricity to power even the most sensitive electronic equipment." So be aware that some cost effective generators may not work well with your warmers.
Honda/Yamaha under rate what their generators will do.
Don't look at the running capacity look at the start up ratings. Starting up some warmers that take 1500 watts can be a challenge.
Even with our warmers there was a Coleman model ,1800, that could not start up ours with 900 watts. So ensure you look at what your warmers need and ensure the start up specs are greater. If it isn't a Yamaha or Honda,,, be suspect of the ratings.
Buy one neighbour firendly!

I am not trying to discourage the OP from looking fora a good quality Honda and Yamaha generators, just including this for your information and as a possible option if you are on a budget:

I have this one, which I bought at 50 percent off during the winter sales. It is very noisy and definitely not a generator people will put up with during camping overnight. However, during trackdays I have it set up on a 50 feet extension cord away from the pits (although more often than never my neighboring riders run bigger and even louder generators in the pits). This generator has been running a set of bickle warmers without a hitch for 10 days this summer already, and believe me when I tell you I turn it off only during lunch to put gas. Only one thing that happened----before the season began, I tried it at home and I broke the little plastic mechanism that starts it (with the cord). Turned out I've been yanking it way too hard to start it. I called Champion, they directed me to their Burlington service center (10 mins away from home)---the guys who work there said "we should have made this from metal, not plastic"....anyway, they gave me a few such complete assemblies for spares. 3 bolts to change, and it's been working no problem since then (just don't yank it like you do to start the snow machine, haha).. Anyway, just sharing the info I have. You're best off if you find a Honda, no doubt, people say those things will outlast your riding career :)

If you are travelling to the States for a trackday, buy it brand new from Mayberry's ($900usd for an EU2000i. free shipping and no taxes outside NJ) and have it shipped to your hotel room.

Canadian tire has a champion inverter generator that works pretty well. I'm on the second season with mine and haven't a single issue. Change the oil at the end of the season and only use ethanol free gas. With a price of $599 on sale it's pretty hard to beat and it's quiet! Not as quite as the Honda under full load but definatly neighbor friendly.

Bought the same one on sale. Yes it is louder than the Honda but I was trying to minimize my costs to get into the sport. It has damage from a car accident and still runs great. I am just finishing my 3rd year with it and it still starts on the first pull. Likely 250 hours on it and running great. They will shut off by themselves if they start to overheat sitting in the sun on a 30C day at the track.

Thanks for this. I didn't know Champion made an inverter.

I just registered on the CT site to be informed when it goes on sale. :)

Absolutely zer problems with the new genny. Wish I had ponied up the scratch two yrs earlier. Would have saved me a pile of headaches.
