Decline of group rides (quantity) and how do you cope with it?

No matter how many times you tell some people that the ride will be too fast for them, they will insist on coming out and crashing

Organizers should tell people how fast/experienced/insane the ride is.
That way people would know what to expect.

You do realize you just incriminated yourself by admitting to be doing 200+ in a 90 rite?

I hope it holds up in a court of law, I will claim it was a fantasy post in a forum. Good luck trying to prove me wrong and finding witnesses.

If you want a glimpse into the human condition I find group rides are chock full of information. Decoding it might take some effort tho. Yesterday, for instance, I found myself on a small (4) unscheduled group ride. The self imposed leader, riding a cafe "racer" had no gloves or boots and rode like a turd. I don't know what that means exactly but it can't be good.

1/ Early apex, then running wide at blind corner while still going slow.

2/ Unwilling to pass slow car even when given plenty opportunity. This was particularily frustrating because of curvy section coming up. Followed car thru curves and well beyond. Experienced unhealthy tightening of the chest as a result.

I cope by not caring about group rides.

But that's just me.

What's fast for some can be slow pace for others

I once came across a group ride at the Forks of the Credit that decided to pull over and have a chat in the middle of the hairpin, where the access to the railway is. I told them they should probably find a better place to stop.

I started leading group rides really recently and honestly...leading sometimes sucks.

I know the group I ride with very well. We've got a few knee draggers and adrenaline junkies with my gf and a close buddy who are fairly new. The pace that the majority want to go has caused said close buddy to crash. I recently lead a group and went at a moderately safe speed not passing any cars. Close buddy said it was too fast, gf said it was slow, and adrenaline junkies did a ricer fly-by to the agreed upon destination because they were bored.

You can't please everyone =(

P.S. I was bored ********.

For the most part leading sucks.
The only good I find about leading is that I ride my own pace, and I do not have to worry to much about people taking me out.
I know I can ride the curves at the pace being led. I am safe and I will not crash.
Following in a group is not the same at all. I find it very dangerous in the middle of the pack.
So leading makes me feel safer.

Yes, there's that. I was talking about riding incompetently while still going below the speed limit. While wearing an open face half helmet, no gloves or boots. Led by a guy on a faux cafe "racer". I was shaking my head at the human condition that would allow 50+ yr. old men do this. He should put on ape hangars and hiway pegs and leave us normal people be.

You can ask any of the group leaders who's rides have gotten popular. After a while you get tired of picking people out of the ditch and other nonsense which comes with riding with people you don't know.

Once you lead enough rides you get a good core group of riders you know and can trust to ride with. Then there isn't much point advertising public rides anymore.

Also, once you and your group get faster, you get bored of the street and start heading to the track and realize how much our roads suck.

+1 Totally agree.....riding with strangers anything can happen. This will be my third season on GTAM and have seen maybe 10 accidents. It's becoming all too common

And what do you do when going around an endless loop gets boring? Get a more expensive bike and crash harder?

The core members of the group I ride with are sport bike enthusiasts, myself included. We want a safe environment to go WOT and not risk catapulting ourselves off a guardrail. I'd imagine that once we all sign up for a track course in 2014, trying to beat each other or our own times would never get boring. If it did, I wouldn't have bought every Gran Turismo since the PS1 lol

True. I know some life long racers. I bet there are more ex-racers. Cost/benefit ratio sucks.

My group ride starts with usually 8-10 people (I would prefer more but too many people seem to share your view), I try as hard as possible to lead but that usually ends after the first corner and I end up chasing a couple guys sometimes just one while the others follow. We all ride at 100% and most finish the ride, those that don't either get picked up in a trailer or an ambulance if its really bad. At the end of the day we usually have a beer and talk about how well we rode and fix our setup to try and lead next time. These rides aren't for everyone but those that can handle the "monotonous" adrenaline filled ride get more enjoyment out of a 20min ride pushing ourselves and our bikes to the limit than cruising around looking at the countryside for hours or days on end. This type of ride may not be your thing and so be it but don't for one second think that anyone out there doing what they love is expecting to make money or break even. For me wasting money on insurance/plates/the middle of my tire is just that, a waste. After 11 years of looking for fun on the streets I got more enjoyment in 2hrs on the track wearing out the sides of my tires than I ever found on any public road. I may eventually return to the road but I will always remember every heart pounding pass that I made, attempted or was made on myself.
