Sport Touring Suggestions

So I'm toying around with the idea of switching to a more practical, touring friendly setup since riding around the city is getting boring and I'd like a bike that I can take to the beach for a day or camping comfortably, with some hard luggage on and maybe more comfort for a passenger but I still like hitting the twisties and having some fun. I know many people do this on an SS but that's doing things the hard way IMHO and I'm not really interested in that. I don't want to drop crazy money for a new bike so here is a few options I've been considering.

BMW K1200S - Been drooling over these for a while. Bike looks great and looking at it gives me a boner, has decent power, factory luggage options, a lot of fancy bells and whistles (heated grips, electronic adjustable suspension, etc.), What scares me is maintenance. Are beamers really bad for this? AM I screwed if I dump it?
I think you'll find the cost of maintenance for the BMW to be relatively high
VF4 800 - Proven design, bike looks good, relatively inexpensive compared to the other options, Lots of luggage options also. Insurance will be CHEAP. Sounds good. Cons: Lack of power. Am I going to find it boring after riding an SS? I rode a BMW F800-ST and found the engine boring but it was an inline 2
Nice bike, but a bit small for 2 up touring

ZX14 - I don't think I really need this much power but I like the looks, maintenance should be cheaper since it's a Japanese I4, parts relatively easy to find and spares more common. Cons: Lacks refinement, insurance will probably be $$$, more engine than I feel I need.
Why not get the C14 instead, windshield and hard bags, ABS & all the goodies. Nice ST bike. Saw one at GP bikes a few weeks ago for a bit over $10K. Was an '09 I think and looked virtually new.
Any comments or other suggestions are appreciated but keep in mind that I'm more interested in the SPORT side of things and don't really want too upright of a sitting position or anything even bigger than these bikes. I'm also not 100% sure I'm going to go this route but I'm weighing my options.
You don't mention how many miles a day you're planning to do. If you're looking at long tours the ST1300 and FJR 1300 are good bikes and there are many low KM bikes to be had for $8 - $10k and they last forever. My ST is starting it's 12th season and is still going strong. Many would say these are more tour than sport, but after 10 or 11 hours in the saddle you'd appreciate the different focus and they do well with 2 up riding.

Seems like the Roasted dude is becoming domesticated...passenger, comfort, luggage...are you sure this is what you want or the girlfriend wants eh?...lol. Maybe a sporty compact wagon?...lol.
I think he hand in his man-card a long time ago. Once upon a time he was talking about banging chicks now he's talking about an old man's bike.

He's dead lifting 800lbs & he's saying he wants a more relax riding position

As they say, Love & insanity display the same symptoms

I would never tour without a windshield. It really sucks not to have one.
I really don't know why people are mentioning naked bikes. I would guess they make terrible tourers because of the wind

How often do you plan to tour 2-up?
It can be done on the VFR (once in a while) but yes, it won't be as comfy as a bigger sport-tourer like an FJR or the like.
On the other hand, what about when it's just you? The VFR is still pretty good at that.
Not sure I'm ready yet to have a large toure as my only bike when I feel like hitting the twisties.

I keep debating myself, I want a bigger bike, currently I have a 600, Some parts hurt a lot sooner on a sportier bike, so I am considering a cruiser, but my heart just cant get there? So I start looking at some of the comprimises.... I like the VFR's 800 and newer 1200's.I like the BMW K1200S, Beautiful bike but it falls into the 1000cc+ SS category for insurance

Something I recently saw that I found interesting was the FJR, sound silly but 1200cc, almost 150hp, shaft drive for maintenance. Built for touring with some sport. It has hard bags that come off in a snap and actually looks decent with some mods, pipes and clip ons type bars to get rid of the factory ape hangers. Not sure if i completely buy into it, but it makes me think... From what I know they are a pretty bullet proof bike

Modded: can't find a picture, but this guy did some pretty interesting things with clipons and two some two brothers cans: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VE_LAwsym1E

Prices are pretty decent where you could pick up a solid used bike for $5-7K, maybe less if you look

Okay, I will step in here and tell you what I know about FJR1300's, got one, a 2003, owned it since 2004 and it had 5,000 kms on it, it now has 235,000 kms on it. Mechanical problems, none. Electrical Problems, two, had to replace the ignition switch and the high/low beam switch. I can have the tires off in 15 minutes, ( except if I forget to put a 1/2 or greater board under the centre stand ), which is about twice a season as they keep on wearing out.

Modifications, stainless steel brake lines, power commander and a Yamaha Cobin seat. I know you can do but why bother I am too busy riding it. The saddle bags and top case work flawlessly and can be removed and installed in no time at all.

We have been as far north to James Bay, far south as Key West and as far east as Newfoundland. I have been in the saddle for up to 19 hours. Now when my wife tells me to go get a bag of milk, she puts a return time on it or else she comes along, and she loves riding on the back.

When ever I think about getting a new bike, I take the old grey mule out for a ride and remind myself what it really is all about.

If you want to find out more info on the FJR go take a look at

The FJR1300 is a great bike. I bought an 08 last Aug. It's sporty and fun to ride, not as uncomfortable as a sport bike and has the hard bags for traveling. I really love mine and can't wait to get on it and ride this season. Mine even came with the rear trunk.

Sad to hear. Don't do anything halfway man. Get yourself a Yamaha Warrior Midnight Edition, a quarter helmet, leather vest and go renegade. Sick bike and the girlfriend will still respect you!

Hey you shadap lol

If I was looking at a sport touring bike, it would either be the FJ or the Concourse. Councours looks like a pretty sweet bike and using the ZX14 power, it should have more then enough get up and go when you twist the throttle. Outside of the BMW bikes, the FJR and Concours are the only sport touring bikes I would look at. If your touring, you dont really want a naked bike as you want that wind protection.

Katana 600/750

/thread

Im semi serious I love my Kat and have toured on it will saddle and rear but the lack of hard cases and Top cases is annoying. You are probably also looking for somthing for a bit more Ummff. I will also be upgrading to somthing a little more comfortable in the next few years as the wife is getting to be interested in going away for the weekend with the bike. I wish that susuki had a nice sport tourer..
