Can someone give me their thoughts on the Dunlop Q2?

I've only had Dunlops once, the ones that came with my VFR and remember how much better the bike felt once they were swapped out. I can't remember what model they were but I've been turned off Dunlops ever since. I need tires and they can be had for a pretty decent price but I don't want a sketchy tire! They will be used 100% on track... (not on the VFR!!!)

Check with pro 6 I'm sure they would recommend a dedicated track tire not Q2 if they will be used 100% at the track. I know Sandy mentioned one to me with the same tread pattern as the Q2 but with a stickier compound, can't remeber what it was.

I use my Q2 on street and track without any issue, been really happy with them too.
 
I'm very happy with my Q2s. I had the OEM Dunlops on my 600RR and didn't like them. Switched out to Q2s and I'm very happy with them but I also had the suspension setup by John Sharrard 2 days before switching to the Q2s.
 
I've ridden track & street on Q2's and they are pretty good for both, best bang for buck IMO.
 
Is it the GS you're tracking? If you're going to be running in novice group those tires are cheap, will have tons of grip and last a long time. Once you bump up to intermediate start thinking about running a proper track tire tho, either a DOT, or i found the Bstone 003RS (racing/street) to be a nice half way step into the world of race tires.
 
I should have mentioned that they will be on a SV650 trackbike. It's new to me so I imagine the first couple days will be relatively easy riding! Also not using tire warmers!

I know you said track only I have been on Q2's for the past 7000km on a CBR RR and the rear is almost done. Previous tires have been BA 016, BA 003 and BA 023's. Hands down these Dunlops give me the best feeling. I have not had one moment where I lost faith in the Q2's. The profile of the tire leads you to typically only use 3/4's of it that or i've become better at hanging off the bike. Warm up time is almost non-existent as well. Personally the only downfall has been the wear but you cant fault them for that as they are truly a track/street tire.
 
Have you ever done a track day? Are you just learning or do you plan on running expert group. That kind of matters.

EVERY time you replace worn out old tires the new ones will feel better!

The Q2 is a fantastic tire and is very suitable for the track, even if it's not ideal as a dedicated track tire. On performance alone they're great, and when you factor in price it's a no brainer. I used them on street and track and will use them again. I only switched to D209 DOT track tires when cheap ones were being unloaded to make way for the newer D211s.

I actually took a measurement maybe a little miss leading with my previous statement I have 1/2" untouched on both sides of the rear. My point was more so the fact the the profile of the tire makes it have an effortless turn in since it has more of a triangular profile vs the rounder profile I am a costumed to the BA's. I just feels like I don't have to lean the bike as much on the Q2's.
 
I have a couple weeks on my Q2's and like them much better than the PP 2CT's they replaced (I've tracked the PP's as well). Q2's are a much better tire IMO and I wouldn't hesitate to use them on the track. BUT, for dedicated track tire without warmers, I'm using the R10's and would recommend them over the Q2's.
 
So, to answer the questions posed to me first:

FriendlyFoe: This will be my 5th trackday, but my first on the SV. I ride intermediate at the RDT (where I plan my first SV track day) but I would go novice anywhere else.

Fastar1: I understand that new tires are going to be always better feeling that the old ones going out... what I was trying to say was that the replacement tires I've gone through have all felt better when new than the Dunlops did when new. I was at no point happy on the Dunlops. I was not implying that an old tire could ever be better than any new tire! The first Dunlop experience has simply left me jaded.

Hardwrkr13: Thanks for the input, would you go R10 over Q2 despite the price difference?
 
It depends on your pace. If you are not going fast enough there is no point in the race tires.

Oh i'm definitely thinking qualifying heat race, maybe he registered late lol. It wouldn't be much of a big deal for the race, watching him check out on top level local racers would be mind blowing.
 
Call me crazy but.. I actually preferred Michelin Pilot Power 2CT's on my F4i then the Q2's that are on it now. I've run Shinko Whatevers, BT-014, BT-016, Pirelli Diablo Superbike Pro's, Michelin Pilot Power 2CT's, and now Dunlop Sportmax Q2's. (**Superbike Pro's are on my trackbike which is a matching bike to my streetbike).

I prefer the feel of the Michelins. The Dunlops will turn, sure but it feels slower and more progressive. I think I preferred the faster turn-in on the Pilot Powers. I may very well be crazy though.

From what I've heards ther is a certain degree of personal preference that enters into when you start to talk about the feel and responsiveness like that. Personally I'm not a good enough rider to tell the difference to that level of detail. I just find them grippy, good wearing and well priced.
