the Bumpstart

when was the last time anyone had to resort to trying this method to start your bike ?

I had to use it on friday after my battery died on me. first time, and it worked like a charm.
i looked it up later and read that most people put it in 2nd gear to do this 1st gear seem to work fine for me.

anyone have an idea why 2nd is better ?

turns over a bit smoother as it's not trying to spin the engine up high right away and is not so jerky.

i did this for about a month at the beginning of the riding season, too freaking lazy to replace the battery i guess...yup, i was the idiot running down the street in traffic to get it started...i got my exercise alright...very appreciative of a few folks on here to hold up traffic for me...not all bikes like bump starting, but mines a bit of a tractor, so it doesn't seem to mind...

if you try and start it in first the rear wheel sometimes locks up and wont turn the engine over. if you start it in second the motor will turn over and the rear shouldnt skid.

I used to do it on my 250 and then my 1100, 250 liked second gear and 1100 liked third gear the best.

Between our dirtbikes and the old street bikes a week seldom goes by that I'm not bumping something. Most times its second gear with a kid pushing.

Indy a few wks ago..left GPS on overnight. Tried to push start the bike in the AM...forget it. Big v twins are brutal to push start. FOund a dude with booster cables instead,LOL

Another good tip is that i used my cbr 125 to bump start my 05 altima. just hook up cables and let bike run for about 5 minutes. disconnect everything and start the car.

And this is why I love kick start.... Mind ya I'd prob break a leg trying to kick start my 1100.... but I love my kickstart cb360.

i'd love to have a kickstart bike as my next ride...it's like you start driving a car and never had a stick shift..well, maybe not that monumental...maybe electric and manual windows...ok, not that either...bah, never mind...

I dont think you can find it on a newer bike. But there are tons of vintage ones around they just require a bit of love from time to time but then I love my 360 even if shes a hoe.

last time i had to bump start..........

this past March.

I was in the middle of California.
With a rented bike.
No idea where the closest help was.
I went to hit the started and it wouldnt turn over.

What felt like 3 hours later, actually only 15mins, and 5/6 attempts...I got it going.

Needless to say I was a little bit worried at the time.

It was one of those moments that builds character, and I passed.

bumpstart is a great thing to know how to do.

figure out where third is, maybe second, hold clutch in and run as fast as you can, jump on and drop the clutch. Its not hard and only about 3 bikes are made with kickstart these days its not a bad thing to learn.
Dont forget to turn the ignition to the on position, watched some poor sod push his bike three blocks bumping it before he figured that out.

I did mine today.

Wife called home just after 8AM and said she forgot her work ID tags. So I hopped on my bike, 1982 Yamaha Vision (550cc V-twin) and delivered the package. Go back outside and my bike cranks but won't fire up ,either the valves are out of tolerance or she just doesn't like to start once she is sightly warmed up. So I just put her into 3rd and pushed, and pushed , and pushed until she fired up. Definitely got my days cardio work out.

That's a boost. Not a bump.

Push starting your bike is a very useful skill that you will use in the future. Too bad newer bikes don't come with kickstart. I can only recall the Royal Enfields.

I sometimes bump start my Nissan Altima, but only on a downhill.

Note that to recharge your CBRs battery you need to rev it above ~3k rpm. Sitting at idle does not do much. Otherwise you're just running down your little battery.

I tried last friday, after I realized it had been over 3 weeks since I last rode. I think my alarm slowly drains the battery. I gave up after a few tries. the rear was just skidding even in 2nd gear.

It works just fine when the bikes at least slightly still warmed up, but a cold start I say forget it.

Doesn't the battery need to have at least enough juice to pressurize the injectors in order to bump start a modern bike? I thought with no fuel pressure the bike wouldn't fire. Bump started my old dirt bikes many times, but never had to try it with my newer FI bike.
