Petition to ban commercial vehicles from US129 (Deals Gap)

[
If you must cross into the oncoming lane to make a turn, watch out for vehicles coming toward you.Give them room to go by or to stop. However, don't back up for them, because you might hit someone behind you. See Figure 2.13.
Pretty sure the manual is referring to a turn at an intersection where vehicles are controlled by lights or stop signs. Not by the cover of dogwoods in bloom.

It's good to see some logical people on here. Instead of the "omg this road is fun lets get the trucks off so we can go faster and nothing will go wrong". Even on the long curvy roads in Ontario you see retards in cages crossing the yellow line. At least with the truck your expecting that and you can adjust your riding accordingly.

It's really funny hearing people talking about going through a blind corner and being faced with a truck....It's a blind corner.... hello.....it means you don't know what's coming up, so slow down so you can stop if something is on the other side of it.

I know I'm going to get flamed and especially for taking turbos side. :)

Stay safe people, we aren't the only ones on the road.

SERIOUSLY people! Stop arguing about who can ride and who can't. This ^^^ JUST happened to one of our own. Toysareforboys/Jamie VERY recently had this happen. The SUV was completely in his lane and almost killed him after it took out Xtina in front of him. There is a thread in the Fallen Riders threads with detailed descriptions of what happened. So lets help prevent it from happening to more motorcyclists even if it is a little more distant than a few kilometres from downtown T.O.

Basic road safety - don't drive your sightlines and ability to react, even if it means crawling in places.

So what you're really saying is, don't ride that road. Because you really are out of your element here.

That is exactly my point. It happens all the time with vehicles that are not trucks and on less complex roads... You can't ban all vehicles off a road just to make it safe for riders... You can however adjust how or where you ride for your skill level or comfort level. AGAIN to clarify cause you guys seem to think this is directed at riders... it is not. It is directed to anyone on any motor vehicle.

Don't you think it pains me to look at the fallen riders section with all these deaths/injuries that could have been prevented???? Yes, all off them could have been prevented...

Before you all start flaming me about nothing the rider could have done... I understand that... it still could have been prevented by the (in most cases) distracted driver.

Why not ask the sate to make it a toll road and have marshalling etc. So you can ride 10- 10ths all the time.

You can have all of that. The danger is largely from impatient people messing up a right hand corner and crossing into your line, not really trucks. But big vehicles compound the problem by frustrating riders so much that they pass in bad places, so there is definitely that element.

I've ridden 10/10 my ability on the road at least a few times. The funny thing is, when I did actually crash it was at 30mph in the rain, following the law. Go figure.

This isn't just for motorcycles... sigh... Even soccer moms can be killed running into one of these trucks. No worries, keep posting against it, it keeps this thread active and more people who want this road closed to trucks can get a chance to sign the petition. Saving lives of bikers and drivers too! Thank you for posting either way the petition is less than 200 signatures away! Thanks to both sides!

rafiki - Wasn't flamming you, just used your point to make one of my own:)

on some corners i suspect that would put you at danger of being rear ended by some one traveling at the speed limit
Great, so instead of controlled slowing before the blind corner, just carry on around at speed blindly then, only to have the rear-ender happen around that blind corner when you unexpectedly find the road blocked in front of you and you have to come to a much faster and complete stop, possibly assisted by your hard impact into that blockage.

I'm sure that strategy must have a certain sort of rationale sense. I'm just having trouble seeing it.

So turbodish your selling being under control? Going so fast then stopping leaning into the bends is imposible. Breaking while cornering that fast, lol
Sorry but I'm not buying what your selling. Does look like you were having fun though, glad their was no truck that day.

I'm afraid that you simply aren't seeing the obvious difference here. I've come around the blind right hander immediately west of the hairpin on Forks, at a pretty good lean, and found that a couple of oldies were parked in the middle of the road, standing beside their vehicle to admire the pretty red leaves. I avoided both the oldies and their vehicle, with a fair margin to spare.

When you're talking about a transport truck, on a road like The Dragon, there is nowhere to avoid it except going off the (frequently pretty steep) edge of the road.

being stopped or slowing to a crawl past any blind corner will put you in a position of vulnerability, most people would not expect you to be going at that speed when they themselves come around the corner. just because you came to a crawl before going around the corner doesn't mean the person who was trailing you by a km was in a position to see you nearly stop because they were beyond yet another blind corner themselves and not having turbovision they couldn't see you.

"turbovision" hahahahaha I almost ****** myself laughing! Gonna think of that when I go into a blind corner! I'm gonna scream TURBOVISION!!!! lol

Get it right, it's TurboVision <tm>.

My turbosense was tingling and telling me that there's something funny in this thread

All of you, get it right.

Turbovision ON!

Actually, I envision the guy stopping his bike, getting off, and walking it around all the blind corners of the Dragon........just to be safe, ya know.
