In just one hour, 10 out of 12 in the pack busted for street racing.

I think that the penalty for ANY racing of any sort on a public street or road should result in permanent loss of your bike and your M license.

If it was a rock solid conviction with video evidence of the race taking place, I might agree. But that's a tough one to ink into law and collectively nobody benefits from laws which allow the government to seize citizens' private property.

I'd say that collectively everyone benefits when reckless people have potentially dangerous (to them and others) equipment taken away from them.

Did you guys watch the video? Yes I know they were speeding.... usually when there was no one else around and they had very good visibility. The pass on the double yellow.... I think it was pretty clean, but hey, BC probably doesn't have the same solid line passing laws as we do. Dunno - immediate ban for what they did.... honestly, I think it is lame. There are folks out there driving clueless at the speed limit that are a much greater danger to people's lives. These guys were IMO relatively safe when they opened it up and they were only putting themselves in danger.

Ya ya I know I know, they broke the laws.... I just think the penalty is a bit too severe for the danger they inflicted to other road users.... which I think is minimal. IMO a cell phone talking speed obeying driver is MUCH more dangerous, because he/she is not paying attention, these guys were paying attention.... but that's just me.

BTW - I didn't see a race.

Disagreed. Revoke their driving privileges. If they're caught driving without a licence, proceed with a criminal charge or escalating fines. If they're such a menace and immediate threat to the public they should be in jail anyway.

Having the bike taken away is a kind of a fine you're much more likely to remember and think about,. Some people see paying fines as the entry ticket price to act like an ***. The speeds seen here were just nuts on public roads.

I think it just said they got busted for excessive speeding ( which in BC is 40 km over the limit - its not unlike the 50k "stunting" definition found in the HTA)

I'd say having your licence revoked for an extended period of time is a bigger detriment. Lots of folks can just borrow vehicles or even buy another bike... what's the big deal, drop a few grand on another used 600 and away you go to the races again.

But that's besides the point. I don't favour the pattern we're currently on... constantly throwing more laws at problems and incrementally giving the government more power over our property. Might sound tinfoil hat-ish or whatever; then again, HTA172 would've sounded downright Orwellian to folks just 15-20 years ago, yet here we are.

On the contrary..I'd say 15-20 years ago the attitude would be more likely "ok, you obviously can't be trusted to behave with this (insert posession) we're taking it away" if you show complete disregard for the law. Put it this way...if I had a neighbour who was in the habit of waving a shotgun around (ie not really behaving safely with it)...I'd be happier if he had it taken off him than being fined.

Mandatory Truck Speed Limiters

Electronically limiting truck speeds will promote a cleaner environment, safer roads and a stronger economy in Ontario and Québec.

Starting January 1, 2009, most large trucks driven in Ontario will be required to use electronic speed limiters that cap their speed at a maximum of 105 kilometres per hour.

Studies conducted by the federal government, through Transport Canada, have demonstrated environmental, safety and cost saving benefits of speed limiters. Ontario and Québec are now working together to jointly launch and implement speed limiter regulations.

Several transportation companies have already limited their vehicles’ speed to 105 km/h or less in response to the many benefits of speed limiters.

Why even allow people to own bikes larger than 600cc?

Daddy Dalton capped the largest vehicles on the roads. If he survives this election, how long before he goes after the smallest?

Oh gosh darn...I forgot about all the people that have semis as leisure vehicles.

With an attitude like that, we'd all be on the TTC.

Helicopter pilot was saying something like see if you can get a 30 day suspension or something like that. Hard to make out from the audio.

And one more thing..... the pilot or guy calling things in just seemed to be guessing the speed.... it's not like he was saying... they were traveling 182kph or whatever.... it was like oh they're doing 180 or 200 or whatever speed came into his brain.... dunno, maybe I'm wrong, but it seemed that way. If that IS the case, I CAN'T believe they'd impound those bikes. Really most of the riding seemed fairly tame.

lol, that highway has always had people busted for racing up and down all hours of the night annoying the hell out of the residents...lol...this is nothing new...

I've been riding a pretty long time and driving even longer. Not once ever have I been afraid for my safety, especially not if motorcycles are speeding by on a mostly deserted highway as was the case in the original post.

To use my own fear or lack of confidence to allow our government more power to seize our property is not on my agenda and never will be. There are systems and laws already in place to promote safe and lawful driving and they work about as well as can be reasonably expected. I don't encounter many cases of reckless disregard for safety on my daily commutes and I can't remember the last time I saw a vehicle travelling at truly excessive and unsafe speeds. I rarely see it happen, and its even more rare that it ends in an accident. The worst I'll generally see is tailgaters or people yapping on cell phones and/or not paying attention to their surroundings... and ultimately I'm willing to bet that those folks are the cause of most accidents to begin with. Certainly we're not gonna start talking about impounding their vehicles too, are we? Of course not, not for another 15 or 20 years at least. It's a slippery slope.

The chopper was flying at the speed where if you pass the helipcoter, it's 40km over the limit and impoundable. All those bikes passed the copper at one point or another. You can hear the pilot say this, nabbing the bikes going over the 2nd narrows bridge.

i can't remember the last time i saw an airplane explode while refuelling at the airport. i rarely see it happen, and its even more rare that it ends in an explosion. because of this, airport ground crew no longer needs to ground the airplanes of any static electricity.

sounds ridiculous right? we rarely see speed demons on the road because most people have a brain and know the consequences (or just too scared to go fast). the select few think it's ok to break the law and should be punished accordingly. yea, high speed crashes rarely happen, until it does. would you still sing the same tune if it happened to you?

Maybe it's perspective then because I see dangerous driving everyday from tards that don't realise driving/riding takes a bit of effort and focus as they are operating potentially lethal machinery. I've been driving for a long time too...and in many other countries, and I still have never seen the amount of accidents and stupidity and complete disregard for other road users I've seen here.

killerkeith - Maybe that could be the case.... geez....regardless, vehicle impound for doing what those guys did seems unreasonable. You know part of me wishes they'd just stick a GPS limiter on everything, so that no one could speed. I mean if they really think it is safer (which I don't think is the case)..... do it.... just don't come crying when you lose traffic ticket money and accidents increase.

As far as those pictures... ya same ones I have seen for 10 years. OK it can happen... you can also get hit by lightning while taking a shower. Yes Turbo will post up evidence of it (bike killing a driver) happening here in Ontario after a dude went into a tankslapper due to poor road surfaces and lost control.... 4 years ago or so. Fact is the number of other road users killed because of a motorcyclist's actions are negligible. Cyclists probably kill more people.... yet you don't see them getting their bicycle impounded.

Now - distracted hands free cell phone talking drivers..... geez, dunno, but I'm sure they kill WAY more people.

PUNISHMENT DOESN'T FIT THE CRIME.... that's all I am saying.
