Durham police report a rise in serious motorcycle collisions

What is the baseline for the comparison? Is the rise relative to last year, or the average over the last 5 years? Aside from this year, have accidents been decreasing over the last couple of years?

and as usual, they forgot to mention most of those accidents were caused by ****in retarded drivers.

Every year I see more and more squids, riding like lunatics and almost naked. So this doesnt surprise me at all, and in the end we all pay, insurance premiums will go up, numbers of drivers who hate motorcyclists will go up...and the list goes on and on.

You don't like squids, and that's fine, but from what I have seen there have been a large number of fatal crashes that were non-squid.

I wish more riders would pay attention to the concepts about SMIDSY in my signature and in the thread I started in the general forum as i suspect many of the crashes could be avoided by using the principles that are championed.

Ontario motorcycle fatality and injury numbers over several years up to and including 2008 are available from MTO. Some spikes, but generally only a slightly rising trend line over the years. The 10-year average rider and passenger fatality number is 50 per year. I wonder where this year will slot in by comparison.

You might want to look again. Some fatals were certainly caused by other vehicles, but a lot of those fatals involved nobody but the motorcycle, and rider error was also a primary factor in many fatals involving other vehicles.

8 crashes are they kidding me. Woop de doo da.

That's 8 SERIOUS crashes involving death or serious injury in less than 5 weeks in the relatively limited confines of Durham Region. How many lesser crashes?

Right after Durham police issued that statement, another serious crash at Taunton and Brock happened. The number is now 9 serious motorcycle crashes just in Durham in less than 5 weeks. Do you really think that is normal or inconsequential? Woop de doo da?

If you include the East End Riders, i suppose you are correct.

It's not enough to be statistically significant. It coincides with the weather improving after a very sucky spring and early summer.

Easily said. Not so easily proven is the linkage between supposedly "better" weather and a sudden spike in serious crashes. The weather was not bad before July, and did not change appreciably in July except for some excessive heat that actually worked to keep a number of riders here on the sidelines.

I believe its up to the person claiming a marked increase in fatalities to prove their point with statistics. I'm not seeing any. The info you posted from MTO actually shows a decreasing rate of fatality if all you compare it to is population. And it stops at 2008. So.... how can someone be claiming there is a marked increase? DRP is reporting 8 fatalities; the least someone needs to do to claim an increase is report what the number was for the same time last year.

It may or may not be more dangerous this year. Who the hell knows? All we're getting is anecdotal observations.

there are car accidents too, why no one says anything about it. if a motorcycle does something then everyone is like "oh its a motorcycle accident, this and that blah blah...".

Thanks for posting this. Now my GF is going to check my history, read this then say "I told you! Motorcycling is not safe I want you to quit riding like your friend companion3", and then she is going to have matching black eye's. How am I going to explain this to her father? Maybe I could say it happened on a motorcycle.

Not a fan of the girlfriend beating comment, even if one thinks it to be meant "as a joke"

The actual comment I came here to make is that there are also more riders and more drivers. As more people ride, the numbers will increase, but it speaks little to the actual proportion or probability of accidents and their severity. Like most articles, there is just enough data to garner a reaction, but not enough to provide actual information.
