Bought my first bike today a kawasaki ninja 250.

Seller provided original receipt along with status certificate.

Did some more reading and a seller is required to provide the uvip.

What is the worst case scenario if i got it my self?

If there is a lien on the bike, what course of action can i take

Just go to the ministry tomorrow and buy the UVIP, and see what turns up. Yes it is the sellers responsibilty but majority dont buy it. If there is a lien on it, then i would contact the original seller and try and work something out.
Not screwed yet.. GL

Will do first thing. If there is a lien, can I take legal action? Or do i go over to his place with a bat?

i have bought a car with a lien before, i called the lien company and talked to them and they moved the lien to another car this guy owned, so it wasnt a big deal. But if the bike has a lien i would contact the seller and try and work something out. Going over with a bat wont solve anything, lol. IF there is a lien the company might move it off the bike and onto another piece of his property...wait and see. Be optomistic.

safety cert

status cert was for my property lol my apologies.

Your still good even if there is lien on it

1) Go over and discuss it
2) Call up and ask the bank to have it transferred to another thing he has
3) Court and it is legally his responsibility to provide it - he did sell it without it so you can work on that...

You should've got one in the first place. As soon as he said he doesn't have one, go to the ministry right away and ask for it. Save you time and hassle.

But yea, you're not screwed yet. Just talk to the guy first.

There is a lien against the bike against the original owner.

Bike history
Private Seller traded into a dealership
Dealership sold to my seller
I purchased from seller.

Lien is under the name of the original seller.

I didn't think a dealer could sell a vehicle containing a lein? Isn't this why private sellers must provide a UVIP but registered dealers do not need to?

Lien is under the name that you purchased from? Had he mentioned anything? Maybe he plans to pay it (doubtful if he didn't talk to you about it).

If you're lucky, it could be that the lien has been paid but not removed yet.

The OP's description sounds like the lien is the previous previous owner.

if that's the case, there's a good chance that it wasn't removed, even though it was paid. Happened to a friend that bought his bike from his uncle, it just took a while to update from honda canada to the MTO.

No reason to panic. yet.

Exactly. its the previous previous owner.

Person A Sold to Dealership , Dealership Sold to Person B - Person B Sold to me.

Bike was registered to Person A on June 2010.
Bike was registered to Dealership on March 2011
Bike is currently registered to Person A on April 2011.

If the lien is from the previous previous owner, contact the dealership and they will likely provide you with a lien release letter.

Christ, this is why I pretty much demand a UVIP, even if I have to bribe the seller with extra money LOL.

I hope this works out for you.
