Temporary Permit - Unfit Bike

I boought a bike last November and registered it as unfit because I wasn't planning to ride it until a couple of years from now. However, circumstances changed and I want to get a temporary permit so I can ride it this season. I went to the MTO and said that I would like to get a temporary permit so I can ride the bike to a shop and have a safety done. They said that because I registered it as unfit last year I can't get a temporary permit and the only way to get a safety done is to tow it to a shop get the safety done, tow it back home then go get a regular sticker for it. I didn't argue with the lady. It's completely idiotic.

Short of towing a bike to the shop is there any way of getting around this? I know the Ted at Rosey Toes can ride to your house but the bike is far from his shop in Acton Ontario.

No point arguing with her, she was right. Once it's branded unfit, temp plate is no longer an option.
 
I don't think you had any other options, but someone correct me if i'm wrong.
Is there such a thing as registering it under "storage"? other options?

Ya you put parking insurance on it. I think its like $7 a month and you don't have to get it saftied again. You just call and they put insurace back on it.
 
So if you buy a bike in the dead of winter and can't ride it to get a safety but you still have to transfer it to your name. The only option is to transfer it as unfit eventhough the bike is in perfect shape. This is basically the situation I'm in. The current law forces you to tow the bike twice!

What about registration costs? Do you keep paying every year?

He's not talking about insurance. He wanted to get a temp permit to drive the bike to get a safety done.

OP, its already been said, but you're screwed now. You'll have to tow it because as far as the government is concerned it is unfit for the road.
 
The MTO does not differentiate between vehicles. After purchase you have 6 days from the sale date to register your vehicle. If you do not/cannot get a safety done within 10 days (20 with an extension) the only other option is to register it unfit. It is illegal to not register your vehicle within 6 days of purchase, though this has been done before.

It is not a big concern. Fix it up, Call Ted and he'll do the safety at your house. You get insurance, drive to the MTO and get a plate. You're legally on the road.
 
I found this out the hard way. Even though I had insurance on my newly purchased bike, MTO would not issue a temp plate for an unfit bike. So I bolted on the plate from my other bike and rode to Rosey Toes to get the safety. Of course, he never asked how I had a plate for a bike that didn't have a safety and that's why I like going to Ted.

Thanks Jay. I just might do that. Hopefully he has a new batch of safety certificates. I heard he ran out last week. I'll give him a call.
 
you can also register the bike as "unplated" which from the sounds of it is different from "unfit"
if it's titled as unplated you should be able to get a temp permit to drive a vehicle to get safety done?

unless im mistaken and "unfit" and "unplated" are both the same?

Still waiting for his call ... bad time of year to run out of safety certificates.

That's all he does on Saturday mornings. The safety line up starts early.

You can but only if you have a safety certificate. If you dont have a safety certificate when you register the bike, your only option is to switch it "unfit" status, or buy a temporary permit. Once the temporary permit expires, the bikes status changes to "unfit", and the only way to switch it back to "fit" status is to get a safety done on it. Same applies to cars.

Id recommend against throwing plates from another bike on it, because if you DO end up getting pulled over for any reason or if you get into an accident and a cop has to come out, the fine for misuse of plates is incredibly high. However, ive done this with both bikes and cars, so whether its worth the risk is completely up to you.

They insured mine un-plated for about 30 days. I was in the same situation as the thread starter only I bought mine the day before HST came into effect, so to save the extra cash, I registered it before I could have it safetied.

Unfit registration = calling a mechanic friend to safety it for me.
 
why not tow it to the shop, get the safety, register+plate+insure it, then get someone to drive you to the shop and ride the bike home?
 
Rent a minivan or pick-up for a few hours, (if a minivan take out the back seats or fold them down, take off the windscreen)...... take the bike to get it certified.... there are many places that will do it.

I rather have the peace of mind of not getting into serious crap with the police for what $45 rental?

This is where there are laws in other countries that allow a person to drive or ride strictly to and from an inspection location. You must prove you have an appointment booked with them if you get stopped. I think that is fair!
