Where to get helmet checked after fall

As some may know, I lowsided in November. I was wearing a helmet cam which took the initial impact and popped off from the fall and the helmet has 2 dime sized scratches on the side. I was just wondering if anyone knows if there's a place someone around here or a place to ship it to (for a reasonable price) to get an x-ray of the helmet to see if its still good. Although I don't think(hopefully) the helmet is garbage as it didn't take a direct hit from the fall, and I hit the ground at about 30km/h, I just want to make sure that its still good for safety and piece of mind.

The helmet is a Scorpion EXO-1100.

Does anyone have any suggestions where I would be able to get my helmet checked?

Thanks.

I dont know about Scorpion, but Shoei for 100% sure and i think Arai allows you to ship back your helmets for inspection.

Sometimes its not worth wondering if it took a hit or not.

Yeah, I did a search and only found results for Shoei and Arai, I was just wondering if Scorpion does the same or if there is someone local to go to.

I think I would only trust the manufacturer to inspect the helmet. They are the ones that know the true specs of the outer shell that protects your melon. If it has been impacted even just slightly, it has already lost some of its protective abilities.

I do believe a helmet dropped a certain way from as little as 6' high can be considered unsafe, it all depends how it lands on the ground. The force of gravity alone is enough to impact a helmet if it lands just right.

I'm glad you're smart enough to want to have it inspected. I'm sorry I am not really answering your question though. Have you tried to email Scorpion to ask this same question? I know that when I smashed my Joe Rocket helmet in 2011 and I emailed them to say thanks for saving my life, they were very friendly. They told me the entire staff wishes I get well soon and if I wanted, I could send them pictures of the helmet and depending on what they saw they may have wanted to buy the helmet from me. I got distracted with other things and never got around to it, but still its nice to see a company involved in their product. Besides, I want to cut the helmet in half and put the good side up on the wall as a decorative piece.

Bell does the same thing and their Canadian inspection machine is in Quebec. You have to get the name and info from a Bell helmet dealer bc its a distributor for Bell in Canada but they are the ones that do the inspection and warranties for Bell Here.

I had mine inspected first by the Bell dealer (someone at each dealership should be trained) then they recommended shipping it to Montreal and helped me with the logistics.

Mine was safe to use again but if you have any doubt, dump it and buy a new one!

This is were spending the extra 10% at a reputable retailer really pays off is in the after sales service.

Good luck

if you have a 10$ head, you'll buy a 10$ helmut...if it really doesn't matter to you, just put stickers on the scratches.

Thanks for the $10 input

If the damage goes right through the shell I would replace it. Sportbike Track Time sells Scorpion helmets, You could phone them and describe the damage and see what they say. But really the hemlet did it's job once. If you are betting that it will protect you from a head injury twice, it might be a bad bet. I change my helmets every 3 to 4 years just on the UV exposure.

Anyways, after contacting a dealer that later contacted Scorpion, they forwarded Scorpion's e-mail:

"We don’t have a x-ray machine here to check for EPS compression at our facility, best we can do is a visual inspection. However at 30 km per hr the helmet is definitely unsafe to use."

I think buying a new helmet is the best route as paying to send it in for a "visual inspection" is probably just as good as me taking a look at it and saying "yep, the outside looks good but it may be damaged on the inside".

Sad to see a $300 helmet turn into paperweight after half a year but it seems like thats the only option...

I go through at least one helmet per year with motocross... It sucks, but that $400 saves my brain from being scrambled any more than it already is.

Basically, if you doubt it's integrity, it's time to go get a new one... I've had a crap load of concussions, but I haven't had a full black out concussion since 2009 when I was wearing a cheaper helmet. Had a very similar crash the year after in a better quality helmet. I got dazed from the hit, but finished the race.
Numerous crashes last year with full hits to the head, including one where my helmet was run over and I finished every single moto aside from one with a mechanical with the bike.

Motorcycle helmets are "Single Use" meaning if it contacted the ground with your head in it and you live to tell the tale, the helmet has done it's job. Say to your trusty helmet; "Thank you Helmet!"

Now go and get a new one

I would never even think of getting a helmet checked after a fall like that. It would always be on my mind if the helmet is safe or not, no matter who checked it. Start shopping for a new one.

throw it out, it just isn't worth any degree of risk. While most people have a hard time parting with a few bills, what could it cost you not to? If you could narrow a failure down to this incident, you'd never forgive yourself. If it touches the ground at any measurable degree of speed, its junk.

When my helmet was "compromised" but still looked decent enough, I donated it to the local fire dept for training purposes. I felt good about doing that knowing it would go to good use.

Now go get a new one.

Reading that made me think of putting a melon in the helmet and then hitting it progressively harder with a hammer until the melon shows signs of "damage". Could be a good way to learn first-hand how well a helmet does its job.

Soo For those that were wondering, I decided to go shop for another helmet and check myself to see if there was anything wrong with the one I lowsided in. I took a look inside and behold, cracked chin guard.

I saw that video of yours low siding making that turn in the wet.....don't use that helmet again...If it comforts you, then buy a $100 helmet with DOT rating.
