No Helmet Laws in the USA?

I just passed by Michigan and Indiana to get to Chicago. Weird seeing riders with out helmets. A lot of Harley riders go bucketless. Most of the ss riders have helmets but wear shorts and shirts. Defiantly different mentality down here. Going to check the local gear store, probably only sell shorts. Lol

We just had a big write up in the paper here in Windsor about this and basically 4 out of 5 neurosurgeons agree that NOT wearing a helmet saves the taxpayer the most money in medical care.
The trauma room doctors at Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital pointed out that when helmetless riders arrive in the ER with head trauma its usually so severe that they are beyond help so far less money is spent on rehab, long term care and disability. Most are sent to the ICU to await organ retrieval. They also pointed out that the $20000 in extra insurance Michigan riders must have to ride without a helmet will cover the lions share of the ER visit as little can an will be done in many cases. One other thing they did say was that just sitting on a bike without a helmet can result in sever head trauma as a simple tip over often causes your head to contact the ground a high rate of speed and that they see more of this than you would think. So a helmet should be worn whenever you get on a bike as most time head trauma occurs as a result of the distance your head is from the ground more than the speed the bike is moving when you fall. They were very serious in the fact that no helmet laws are WITHOUT QUESTION the cheaper way to go .This actually makes sense.

I saw a guy today on a bike and he was not wearing full gear...........OMG doesn't he know the dangers involved?????

I don't wear gear...EVER. I like to enjoy my bike ride with just pants and t-shirts, feel the breeze and the freedom. Of course I don't ride stupidly making hard corners on country twisties covered in sand or speed abobe 130 km/h.

America. Land of the free. ummm.....land of laws I say. Florida you can ride without a helmet but, must be insured. You have to tell the insurance company you ride without a helment and pay for the additional risk. Because they pay higher insurance, most riders will insist on riding without because they pay more for the right.

America. Land of the free. Where some states (not all) or counties don't serve alcohol. Where you can't have a beer and a lap dance at the same time. Where you have to be 21 to drink. You can't own a hand gun.

My pet peeve is the folks that ride without a helmet and then throw out crazy information to say it's safer. Since the invention of wheel, the operator knows it's dangerous to ride without a helmet. I prefer it be a choice. But, then I share the road with a bunch of strangers and question that logic. Some folks just need to be told what to do. lol

Stats can be twisted to serve anyone's purpose so, I very rarely accept what is said. Even if it appeals to my view or has some kind of logic to it.

I wear the minimum required DOT approved beannie and hope the extra protien I consume will help keep my organs healthy for the next person that needs them.

Would I ride without? Sure, occassionally and when the notion strikes. If I wanted to be safe, I'd buckle up in the cage.

Carry on.

It's a bit of a broken argument though and more than a little cynical.

IF the accident is serious enough, they argue, a helmet may allow a rider to just survive and be severely disabled. Long term care is expensive in comparison with a funeral (duh). Therefore, all helmet laws are useless.

Rewind a bit, using the same logic. If the accident isn't serious enough (which is probably the vast majority of motorcycle accidents) then a helmet means you walk away with minor injuries, or none at all. The unhelmeted rider is damaged enough to be severely disabled, thus become the burden everyone seems to fear so much.

Perhaps the doctors don't want to lose the last reliable source of young, healthy organs--squids. They are extremely valuable and central to the careers of transplantation surgeons. Patients on the waiting lists would rather get a replacement sooner rather than later, I'm sure. "Your new liver came from a reckless motorcyclist" won't weigh any conscience down, but "Your new liver came from a motorcyclist that would have survived if he hadn't been mislead by foolish politics and repealed regulation," is more problematic.

Helmet laws are pretty weak to begin with, too, so they were hardly models of authoritarian rule.

Gov: Here dude wear a helmet. Keep your brains intact.

Rider: What sort of helmet?

Gov: Full face, modular, open face, beanie, whatever. DOT approved. They're super cheap now.

Rider: What about jackets, boots, gloves, pants, armour, airbag vests and neck braces?

Gov: Pffft, what are you a gear nazi or something? We gave you a parking lot test. You're totally qualified.

Rider: Stop pushing me around! FREEDOM!

Rider: By the way, do you know where I can buy some chaps?

Gov: Check out TuffRiderz or something. I'll be over here passing Orwellian surveillance legislation if you need me.

Rider: Whatever. What about those fingerless gloves?

Gov: Dude, they have a website.

or wear the helmet in the house ...ya just never know ;)

all the gear appropriate and I'm the one that decides that. :D

. I don't pity anyone that chooses not to wear their helmet. If they end up cross eyed and drooling, that's their problem. It's just natural selection.

Pretty sure most car drivers think the same about motorcyclists in general.

Hmmm, i'm pretty sure you don't need a "STUDY" to explain the link between wearing helmets and death rates for motorcyclists... LOL. How can so many states still not enforce mandatory helmet laws? This a way of ensuring population control of the stupid?

Death rate among humans is very close to 100%.
What I pity is people who shake in fear at mere thought that Government may for once not tell them what to do but would allow to make their own choice.

When I showed up to the Drive Test Center to take my M2X yesterday I had my helmet in hand, an I put it on the counter.. the women looked at it and said I guess you're here for a motorcycle exam? I said "Nope.. I always wear this in the car.. you can't be too safe out there!"

In the suburbs of Chicago. Guy had a helmet strapped on the back of his bike. Of the hundreds of riders I seen this weekend only 2 had a jacket on everyone else in shorts and shirts.

Most in light gear today ( Sunday the 10th )- bare arms etc ( up at the old shed ) - I'm dressed lightly as well - no gloves as I'm using the camera and just the mesh which I might lose later when it gets hot.
Stunning day.
Lots of girls in tight bicycling gear :D

Without a doubt, helmets add safety. However riding without one is truly an awesome experience.
