Mangle finger while cleaning

lubing the chain and cleaning up the rear rim, etc. And I've always found it effective to run the bike in gear to speed up the process. After putting it back together and flushing/bleeding the fluid, I was cleaning up the rear wheel. I caught a finger somewhere. and a mangled finger. if any of you run your bike in gear on the centerstand, don't learn the hard way like I did.I just posted this in the hopes it helps someone avoid what I went through.:(

There was a thread somewhere and a guy was cleaning his chain with a rag with the bike running and in gear.
I think he lost like 4 of his fingers after his hand got caught between the chain and the rear sprocket.
Yeah... My engine is always off when cleaning my chain!

Sorry for yer loss. Hard lesson. Never put the bike in gear to clean/lube the chain. It's an assdent waiting to happen.

I can't believe anybody would even think of doing this...

Is it really that hard to spin the wheel manually with the bike off?

Common sense ain't so common I guess..

Hope you heal up good. Its amazing how many people do this. I personally know a few guys who do this and I just shake my head. I also know someone else who had his hand mangled up from doing this, seems like people have to learn the hard way unfortunately.

Here is the thread about someone loosing their fingers cleaning a chain.

arning graphic pictures. Hope you don't ride a gixxer cause the flaming will start and you will give us gixxer riders a further bad name.

Ahh... That's the one.
My buddy showed it to me before I started riding, I always assumed it was on this forum though.
Anytime I'm cleaning and lubing my chain, that thread is in the back of my mind.

links to it were posted here.

How much time would you normally save running the bike in gear to lube the chain? It's not that long to do it with the bike off.. spin wheel with hand and dab oil on chain...

<sigh>

My job in the real world involves trying to stop people from doing stuff like that.

Arrrrrrgh.

** WARNING **
DO NOT STICK YOUR FINGER IN HERE!
LOCK EQUIPMENT OUT BEFORE SERVICING

... or something like that.

Never ceases to amaze how many people out there need to be sheltered from their own gross stupidity...

I'm really happy that you didn't end up losing any fingers and it just got mangled up...

Yeah - thank you gtam for showing me that thread where this guy lost a couple of fingers. I always think of that when I run my bike to lube it running and I turn it off quick to just manually rotate the wheel.
