Kerosene is cheap and you can get it from any hardware store or cdn tire. You can use a rag to clean the bulk stuff, and an old toothbrush to finish it off. I put it in an old spray bottle (eg. used up household cleaner spray bottle) for easy of application. Make sure you put down lots of newspapers underneath the chain to catch the drippings. Just don't be smoking before/during/after you clean the chain
Or you could buy the Tirox cleaner as it comes with a handy brush.

+1 for kerosene. I just line the area under the bike with cardboard.
